Yearington, Ballinger and Mother Nature score at Adams County Speedway

CORNING, IA (Sept. 6) - Mother Nature will now get credit for a new record but she will only get credit for 9 ½ rainouts on the season. The NASCAR Whelen All-American Series at the Adams County Speedway will see the season end in the only way that is fitting for 2008. Ron Ballinger and Kevin Yearington each captured feature wins before rains came and forced the rescheduling of the final race of the season for the Budweiser modifieds and Whelen late models. Matt Williamson and Steve Churchill each claimed their first ACS point titles in exciting and unlikely ways.

For the first 13 laps of the 15 lap NAPA hobby stock feature saw Josh Sink lead the way with all the excitement building behind him. With two laps to go Sink and second running David Weeda had some contact that sent Sink over the turn two bank and into a roll, which he walked away from unhurt. Weeda went to the pit for repair giving the lead to Kevin Yearington which he held to the finish for his third win of the season. He was followed by Matt Williamson, Tom Myers, Robert Hague and Ray Knipe. The feature also unofficially saw four drivers claim the point lead at some point. Trent Davison started the night with the point lead and early in the race, he was in position to take the title until an incident landed him in the cornfield with too much damage to continue. This gave the unofficial point lead to Jesse Sobbing until a tangle with Matt Hudson sidelined him. That left Jeremy Auten and Williamson to battle for the title and Auten had to pit late in the race for a flat tire and fell two positions short of gaining enough points to take the title from Williamson.

Dave Schafroth led the first few laps of the Northland Oil pro street feature until under caution he was inspected for a leak and had to pit for repairs. This gave the lead to Craig Garner and that only lasted a few laps until Ron Ballinger took over and led the rest of the way for his third win of the season. Ballinger was followed by Brad Derry, Garner, Steve Churchill and Jeff Orr. Churchill took the point championship and getting there had the same drama the NAPA hobby stock feature created. On lap five Churchill got into an incident that sent him to the back of the field and left Greg Miller, who already had an 11 point lead coming into the night, in the lead pack. Only two laps later, Miller had contact from close racing that caused his bumper cover to come loose but he was able to remove it under a caution and join the back of the field. Miller then charged through the field and as the field took the white flag Miller was on Churchill’s bumper. As Miller entered turn one his right front suspension broke, sending his tire and wheel over the bank and he stopped in turn two as the field took the checkered.

Rains moved in before the start of the Budweiser modified feature. An announcement will be posted on www.acspeedway.com  early this week for the rescheduling of the Budweiser modified and Whelen late model features, which will be sometime on the weekend of September 13th and 14th.
