Brian Brown – Knoxville Next!

(Bill W) April 22, 2009 – Brian Brown towed to West Burlington, Iowa looking for the win in the inaugural 34 Raceway 360 Sprint Invaders Spring Nationals, but the Saturdaty finale was a wash.  The Grain Valley, Missouri driver was in good position after locking himself into the event following a solid fourth place run on Friday.  This week, the Brian Brown Racing SuperClean #21 team will turn its focus to the 410, as the season at the Knoxville Raceway begins.

A rare time trial effort with the Sprint Invaders resulted in the sixth quick time of the night on Friday.  With a predetermined invert of ten in the feature event, it was advantageous to be off the pace a bit.  “We didn’t qualify the best there,” says Brian.  “The format was different than anything we run, but it was the same for everyone.  You look at the gray areas in the format and try to give yourself the best chance to win.  It’s just like anywhere else in that respect.”

Starting in the back row (four), Brian was able to find his way through the pack for an 8-lap heat race win.  “We felt good about the car after the heat,” he says.  “There was plenty of room on the track to maneuver and we were able to get up through there.  The car was working well.”

The team tried some things in the feature that didn’t pan out.  “When you’re out there with the ASCS, the Sprint Invaders, the Outlaws or Knoxville, it’s tough to be able to go in and say, ‘Let’s try something to make ourselves better in the long run,’” Says Brian.  “We were good in the heat, and liked our chances to win, but we decided to try some things that didn’t work for the feature.  At least we learned something.”

Brian started outside row three, and worked his way up to third by a lap thirteen caution period.  “Early on in the race, we were good and it looked like we could make a bid for the lead there in a few laps, but the yellow came out,” he says.  “After that, the car just didn’t take off.  I don’t know if it was the tire or what it was.  Kaley (Gharst), Ryan (Jamison) and Matt (Rogerson) were running really well.”

The fourth place finish locked him into a Saturday finale that would never happen.  Despite the weather, Brian is thankful for his opportunities and help in Burlington.  “I want to thank (Track promoter) Amy (Laue) and our sponsor for the weekend Electric Rayz Tanning,” he says.  “We really wanted to run well for them on Saturday, it just wasn’t meant to be.”

Thoughts have quickly turned towards Knoxville for the 2007 track champion.  “It’s kind of like a second season for us,” he says.  “Up until now, we’ve run some 360 stuff, but Knoxville is where my heart is, and I’m looking forward to getting up there.  It’s got the best fans, the best facilities in the World, and the best officials, from Cappy on down.”

2008 was rough for Brian’s high standards, especially following up on a championship.  “Last year we didn’t have the best luck in the world,” he says.  “We didn’t win a regular season race there all season.  We did get that win on Friday of the Nationals, and it’s good to win anything at the Nationals.  We’re looking to go up there, and hopefully, reel off some wins and get another point championship.”

The competition won’t rest, that’s for sure.  A fresh engine will be welcomed for the season opener.  “It’s going to be as tough as ever,” says Brian.  “I thought last year was tough, but this year is going to be as tough, if not tougher.  (Danny) Lasoski is gone, but now you’ve got Johnny Herrera, and who knows about some of these guys who have been following the Outlaws?  It’s just going to be tough night in and night out.  We’ll just do our best, and get prepared.   Lee Nelson from Ostrich built us a brand new 410, so we’re anxious to see how it runs.”

Brian's Q&A

David Rozendaal of Des Moines, IA asks: What are your goals at Knoxville this year?

Brian answers: My goal every year is to win 20 races.  We’ve got to pick up the pace to meet that at this point in the season.  We’ve got to win races.  Thirds and fourths don’t equal wins.  We’ll keep plugging away.  Also, winning the point championship is always a goal of mine.  If you have fun doing it, the rest will follow.
