Rocket Hockett – Another Win at the Lake! (Bill W) April 28, 2009 – For Jesse Hockett, standing in victory lane at the Lake Ozark Speedway near Eldon, Missouri, is nothing new. It was a new season at “the Lake”, but some things never change as Jesse picked up his tenth career win at the 3/8 mile oval on Saturday. This weekend will be a busy one in which he competes with the ASCS on Friday, USAC on Saturday, and locally in Missouri on Sunday. LOS was one of few Midwest tracks to get a race in on Saturday, and it paid off for Jesse, who piloted the Jesse Hockett Racing #77. “We were running our car there,” he says. “We were experimenting with the motor on some things. We were basically testing some different stuff with the car.” The Warsaw, Missouri driver drew the pole for his heat race, but things went backwards with a third place finish. “We were a little bit off there in the heat, obviously,” he relates. “We changed things around for the feature though.” After making some changes with the car, things clicked by the time the main event rolled around. “The motor was running really well in the feature,” says Jesse. “We had to start back in eighth, but we got it tuned in enough to get up through there.” The key to the race came at the midway point. “About halfway through the race, there was a restart, and I was in third,” says Jesse. “After the restart, as soon as we got back into lapped traffic, I was able to get by (Josh) Fisher for the lead. We ended up getting through traffic really well and that was the difference. It was great to get another win there.” With nowhere locally to run on Friday, Jesse headed to the Valley Speedway in Grain Valley, Missouri to race a 1200cc machine in the Midwest Outlaw Lightning Series (MOLS). Things were going good in his heat race, but running third, the steering broke, sending him over the bank. He rebounded to drive from 11th to 3rd in the feature. “We hadn’t really raced those before, just the Kansas City indoor race last winter,” says Jesse. “We ended up coming up through there pretty well.” USAC Deals Jesse will compete at the Tri-City Speedway in Granite City, Illinois with the Lucas Oil ASCS series on Friday. After a search, he found a pavement ride for Anderson (IN) Speedway with USAC on Saturday. “We were able to borrow a pavement car from (California’s) Ted Finkenbinder, so I’d definitely like to thank him,” he says. “I told him I wanted to keep running the USAC deal, at least the next seven races or so when it doesn’t conflict with ASCS to see where we’re at. He was nice enough to agree and ship it out here. I want to get some more pavement experience anyway, so this was a good deal.” “The Rocket” lost a 410 motor at Gas City two weeks back with USAC, but there is help on the way for that too. “We’re going to be running Gary Stanton Mopars with the 410 from now on,” he assures. “They’re arriving this week, so we’ll put one in the pavement car and see how we do at Anderson on Saturday.” After his runs in Illinois and Indiana, Jesse will return home on Sunday to run at the opener for Double X Speedway in California, Missouri.
