Brian Brown – Up Front With the Big Dogs!

(Bill W) May 6, 2009 – Brian Brown made a successful debut at the Knoxville Raceway with the World of Outlaws last Saturday night, in his first 410 action of the season.  After leading the first half of the main event, Brian impressed by registering a fourth place run with the best in the business.  Friday plans are to race with the IRA at Burlington, before another Saturday run at Knoxville and some 360 action on Sunday with the NCRA in Wichita.

After struggling with his qualifying through much of 2008, Brian nailed down the sixth quick time of the night in the 47 car field.  “It was a huge relief for me,” says the Grain Valley, Missouri driver.  “It was awesome for us to start the night that way.  Lee Nelson and the folks at Ostrich built us a great 410.  We also had a brand new set of All Pro heads, and a new injection from Engler.  They’ve all got great products.”

Slated to start his heat inside row two, Brian caught a break when pole-sitter Calvin Landis jumped the start.  That put the SuperClean #21 on the pole, and Brian drove away from the field for the heat win and a trip to the dash.  “The Outlaws are sticklers for starting at the chalk line,” he says.  “They don’t care who you are.  They want good starts for the fans, and that one wasn’t.  Calvin just took off a little bit early.  That’s what put us in position to have the night we did, and we took advantage of it.”

A young fan drew Brian the pole for the dash start, and he would like to find out who it was.  The result was another stellar run, as he led the six-lapper from flag to flag.  “I’d like to find the kid who drew for me, and get him a shirt and care package,” says Brian.  “That was huge for our chances.  If that kid is around Saturday, stop by my trailer!  It was my first dash win ever.  It doesn’t matter with the Outlaws…if you beat them in the pits before the races; that’s something.  They are the best of the best.”

Heading into the 25-lapper, there wasn’t much need for changes.  “We didn’t change much all night long, because the car was so good,” says Brian.  “It was the first 410 race of the year for us.  That’s as comfortable as I’ve ever felt in a 410, and that includes our championship season (2007).”

Brian shot out to a lead and ran the cushion to perfection, as Terry McCarl and Donny Schatz moved into second and third.  Brian pulled away after a lap six restart, as well.  On lap 15, Brian got over the cushion in turns one and two and the veterans pounced.  “You need to run 25 perfect laps if you’re going to win one of these shows, and we didn’t do that,” he says.  “You can’t run two bad laps, or they’re going to smell the blood.  Usually, not just one passes you; it’s two or three that get by.  I think the driver may have run out of talent a bit after 16 laps.”

The Brian Brown Racing SuperClean #21 kept pace, however.  He was within striking distance through the rest of the race.  “When they passed me, I honestly thought we still had a chance to win it,” he says.  “I was right there with them.  Usually, they drive off into the sunset.  That’s almost as good for my confidence as winning the thing.  Donny Schatz and Terry McCarl are no slouches.”

Steve Kinser snuck by Brian on the final lap, relegating him to fourth, but it did nothing to deter his confidence.  “It will help us when they come back in June, and hopefully, in August too,” he says.  “We can put what we learned and use it.  We’re really happy with the run.”

Brian is quick to thank those that make it possible.  “It just seemed like everything went right all night long, including the heat and dash.  Our Maxim chassis and motor were really clicking.  I have to thank Chad Morgan, my grandpa George, Derek Beckman and Glen Wignall, who all work on the car.  They work their tail off, and without them, this wouldn’t be happening.”

Racing plans this weekend include a return to 34 Raceway in West Burlington, Iowa on Friday.  This time, the 410 will be in as the IRA series visits.  The IRA then travels to Knoxville on Saturday, and Brian will run his 360 with the NCRA at 81 Speedway near Wichita, Kansas on Sunday.

Brian's Q&A

Kris Vos asks: How much confidence can you gain with a strong run with the Outlaws like you had on Saturday?

Brian answers: It is huge to run well with them.  You always hope for the best, but remember you’re racing with the best of the best.  It’s like playing “HORSE” with Michael Jordan.  You’d like to think you can win, but nine times out of ten they’re going to get the best of you.  It will give us a kick in our step heading to Burlington and Knoxville this weekend.
