Brian Brown – Heading for Jackson!

(Bill W) May 13, 2009 – Two podium finishes last weekend and another top ten in three events gave Brian Brown some momentum heading into this weekend.  A third place finish at Knoxville Raceway Saturday night in the SuperClean #21 highlighted the action.  Big stakes are on the line this week, as the Grain Valley, Missouri driver will compete in the $5,000 to win Jackson Spring Nationals in Minnesota on Friday and Knoxville on Saturday.

Friday’s action started at the 34 Raceway in West Burlington, Iowa with the Interstate Racing Association.  Brian timed in 14th in the 42 car field.  “I ran the wrong line on the track, plain and simple,” he says of his qualifying effort.  “We haven’t qualified too much this year, and with the one lap, you’ve got to be on it.  It worked in our favor though.”

After winning his heat in impressive fashion, an invert draw of eight put Brian on the pole.  The inside was not the place to start, and Johnny Herrera got the jump and left everyone else in the dust.  A late pass by Jesse Hockett relegated Brian to third at the checkers.  “Obviously, Herrera just handed it to us,” he says.  “It was pretty much a ‘schooling’.  The inside wasn’t the place to start, but we could have started with a lap lead, and he still would have probably beat us.  We just weren’t that great.  When you’re average, and have guys like Herrera and Jesse Hockett, you’re going to run third.”

The IRA competed at Knoxville as well, and group qualifying was used.  Brian timed in tenth, about where he wanted to be.  “With the lack of points for qualifying at Knoxville this year, 6th to 10th is about where you want to be, so 10th was a pretty good place to be,” he says.  “That’s going to put you in front of the heat, and heats pay points, and it’s probably going to put you up front in the feature too.  Actually, I prefer the group qualifying to one lap qualifying to be honest.  I’d rather get three laps at it.  There are so many things that can happen with one lap, like a guy in front of you throwing water in front of the track.”

After running a solid third in his heat, Brian lined up outside row four for the 20-lap main event.  By lap six, Brian was fourth, and he moved into third by Skip Jackson shortly thereafter.  Brown stuck with the leader, Herrera and Don Droud Jr. in the middle stages and settled for another third in the end.  “I think we had a chance to win the thing,” he says.  “I got to them (Herrera and Droud) there in traffic, and made a couple decisions where I was caught between some lapped cars.  Overall, it was a good night.  We qualified decent, ran third in the heat, and third in the feature.  If we finish third all year, you’ve got a good chance at winning the points.  We’re close to where we need to be.”

On Sunday night, the NCRA competed at the 81 Speedway in Wichita, Kansas.  Brian finished second in his heat and ran sixth in the feature after starting outside row four.  Tony Bruce Jr. won the event.  “That was about as tough a field of cars for $2000 that you’re going to get anywhere,” says Brian.  “There were some heavy hitters in that top eight.  Add Gary Wright and Shane Stewart and you pretty much had an ASCS National show.  We’re just not the fastest with the 360 right now, and it shows when you battle a field like that.”

The  Brian Brown Racing SuperClean #21 will get a chance to get up to speed with the 360 at the Jackson Spring Nationals in Jackson, Minnesota on Friday.  The show will draw some heavy hitters including Terry McCarl, Billy Alley, Wayne Johnson and many more.  “We’re excited to get up to Jackson,” says Billy.  “We usually run well there…last year we were second to Billy (Alley) in their Nationals, so we’re glad to get back there.  Van Wyhe Livestock and Folken Brothers Trucking have done a great job promoting the event.  They have some big names coming in and are paying a hefty purse.  It goes to show what some good promotion and a little legwork can do.”

Brian's Q&A

Darren Mullikin asks: I’ve heard you say you prefer the slick track, and really don’t like the heavy tracks.  Why?

Brian answers: I grew up with the big half-miles that slick off.  I never got the car comfortable enough to whale it into the corner on a heavy track like I don’t have any friends or family.  You go in there, and sometimes there’s a good chance you don’t come out the other side.  It just doesn’t suit my style.  Luckily, in the Midwest, we usually only see those tracks early and late in the year.  If I lived in California, I’d probably be working at McDonald’s.
