Brian Brown – Back Pains! (Bill W) May 18 – It was a rough weekend all around for sprint car driver Brian Brown. A hard crash Friday night in Jackson, Minnesota dished out back soreness, while electrical problems on Saturday provided the heartache. The Brian Brown Racing SuperClean #21 will try to put the frustration behind them as they head into a five-race weekend encompassing three states. Friday’s race at the Jackson Speedway was the kickoff for the track, and was dubbed the Jackson Sprint Spring Nationals. Brian made the tow from Grain Valley, Missouri with an eye towards the $5,000 first prize. Things started well enough after a good draw and a heat win. “We were lucky to get a good number there for the heat with a lot of heavy hitters there,” he says. “Obviously, the dash draw was the opposite starting in the back row (9th). We were actually pretty good there getting up to seventh.” Starting seventh in the 25-lap finale, Brian worked up into the top five when the incident happened on lap 15. “The car was working well,” he says. “We had moved up to fifth, and coming down the backstretch with ten to go, Wade Nygaard, who was running fourth, was trying to pass a lapped car. I was a half car length back on his outside. All I know is Wade’s car turned right at the last second, and we launched over his right rear.” The wicked crash would send Brian out in an ambulance. “The last time that I landed, it was on all fours,” he remembers. “By then, the tires and the shocks were gone, so we were on frame rails and I took the brunt of the hit. I had a sharp pain run through my spine, and my legs were tingling.” Brian ended up visiting two medical facilities on Friday night/Saturday morning. “The Jackson Hospital had an X-ray machine, but not the proper one, so they sent me on to Fairmont (MN),” he relates. “They did a CAT scan and saw heavy bruising, so they didn’t think it was something they had to worry about. We headed towards Knoxville about 4 a.m.” Though Brian was sore, he was determined to run at Knoxville on Saturday night. The team assembled another car and the 2007 track champion timed in fifth quick in a stout 32-car field. “We’re qualifying well and that’s something we worked all offseason on improving,” says Brian. “Our heat was tough, with a lot of guys that run well at Knoxville (he finished sixth and out of a transfer). Going through the B (winning it) ended up being good for us points-wise (fourth), as we didn’t lose too much ground, even though we didn’t get to start the A.” The car developed electrical issues and left Brian helplessly in the work area when the feature went green. “We think it may be the mag right now,” he says. “We’ve checked over the ignition box. With the electrical stuff, you don’t know exactly what the problem is sometimes, and it just shuts off with no warning.” Brian’s five-race weekend will include two races with the ASCS-Midwest series in Nebraska (I-80 Speedway on Thursday and Junction Motor Speedway on Friday), Knoxville on Saturday, Jetmore, Kansas with the ASCS National series on Sunday, and the 81 Speedway with the NCRA series on Monday. “It’s definitely been a rough start to our season, but we’re heading to a couple of tracks in Nebraska this week that we’ve been good at,” says Brian. “I’m really looking forward to getting back up there and getting our momentum going again. We just need some luck…you need that in racing. Chad Morgan and grandpa (George Lasoski) and everyone else have been working hard. That’s all we can do. It’s just a matter of time.”

Brian's Q&A Larry from Spencer, IA asks: I know it was windy at Jackson on Friday night. How does wind affect the car, and what adjustments do you need to make? Brian answers: You’re kind of helpless with conditions like that. I heard the wind was anywhere from 30 to 60 m.p.h. during the night. When we took the green flag for hot laps, I thought I lost a stop in the front or something. It turned us dead left going down the back chute. The car really drove me down the backstretch all night long. It could have been bad, but on the other hand, if they would have cancelled after the heat races, the racers and a great crowd would have been mad. Got a question for Brian?
