Brian Brown – Rough Weekend!

(Bill W) May 27, 2009 – Memorial Day weekend 2009 won’t be very memorable from a racing standpoint for Brian Brown.  The Grain Valley, Missouri raced five times over the weekend, suffering from mechanical gremlins and DNF’s.  The high point was a fourth place run on Saturday night at Knoxville Raceway, where he will return this Saturday for Hall of Fame weekend.

Brian went to I-80 Speedway near Greenwood, Nebraska with high hopes for the ASCS-Midwest tilt Thursday.  The result was a podium finish, but it left Brian wanting more.  “Obviously, with the two crashes we’ve had, we went into I-80 with another different car,” he says.  “When we hot lapped, we thought we were pretty tight so we freed the car up.  That worked in the heat when we went from 7th to 2nd.  We left it free for the feature.  We weren’t the best.  We led a few laps, but ended up third.  We had to race hard just to end up third.  Chad Humston was fast, but we just weren’t setup like we should have been.”

It was on to Junction Motor Speedway in McCool Junction, Nebraska on Friday.  Brian had never finished worse than second at the 3/8 mile oval.  That changed with a blown tire.  “On the first start (from the pole in the feature), we got into the new inside berm that they built,” Brian remembers.  “That could have cost us a win there.  We got airborne and settled into third.  We were running third, and I think we had a shot at it, but then we blew a tire with about four to go (officially finishing 12th).  That was kind of par for the course with the way things have been going.”

Brian continued his good runs at Knoxville.  He registered the ninth quick time of the night and ran second in his heat.  “It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know that without points, you don’t want quick time at Knoxville this year,” he says.  “We were a tenth off of (Terry) McCarl in hot laps, so we knew we were fast.  Ninth quick is about where you want to be with the format this way.  We had a good run in the heat too.”

Starting fifth in the feature, the 2007 track champion fell back at the start, but rebounded with a solid fourth place finish.  “We fell back to eighth there in the feature, and we were able to come back to fourth,” says Brian.  “Normally, that would be disappointing, but you look at the top five, and that’s some stellar competition.  Knoxville is tough.  When a guy like McCarl goes from 12th to 2nd, you know he’s running well.  We’ve got some work to do there, and we’ll keep plugging away.”

The team towed the Brian Brown Racing SuperClean #21 to Jetmore, Kansas Sunday for the $10,000 to win Steve King Memorial with ASCS.  After winning the heat, Brian found the track conditions not to his liking and finished 15th.  “We were lucky to draw well for the heat, but we were just no good in the feature,” he says.  “It was heavy and developing holes, and that’s just not my style of racetrack.  With the bad luck we’ve had with the accidents this year, I don’t need to be biking and bucking above the cushion.  We cruised along and finished where we finished.”

Misfortune trailed him Monday to 81 Speedway near Wichita, Kansas with the NCRA.  A mishap in the heat caused a chain of events that ended in a DNF.  “I was pinched between the wall and another car in the heat,” he says.  “It bent a wheel and broke the Jacob’s ladder.  We won the B from fourth, so the car was feeling good.  We started inside row eight in the feature, and we got by six cars in a lap.  Then the driveline went.  I think that stemmed from the heat race incident.”

Despite his 360 troubles, Brian is confident heading forward.  “We’re struggling a little bit more now than we ever have with the 360,” he says.  “We’re off base a bit.  It’s not from a lack of effort.  We’re not throwing in the towel after a couple of bad months.  We’re going to keep plugging away.”

Brian's Q&A

Eric Lynch from Corpus Christi, TX asks: This is a bit of a hypothetical question but if you were in a situation where finances and purses were not an issue and you could race purely for the fun of it but had to choose between running only a 360 or only a 410? Which would you pick and why?

Brian answers: Talk about unrealistic!  I have the most fun running the 410 car.  I like the way they feel and run.  We just don’t have enough races around the area here for me to do it exclusively.  If it was unlimited funds, I’d probably go out and run that.  We have more 360 races around here right now, and it’s been on the rise for awhile, so we hit those shows primarily right now.

Brown's Bits

Despite his DNF at Knoxville Raceway on May 16, Brian is off to his best start in the 410 class in the last three years.  His average finish of 7.5 through four races includes that DNF.  In 2008, he averaged an 18th place finish in his first four contests, and in 2007, his average finish was 16th in the first four races.
