(Bill W) June 8, 2009 – Brian Brown finally got over the hump with a win last Saturday night at the Knoxville Raceway. It had been quite a drought in the win column for the Grain Valley, Missouri driver, dating back to his first race in March. This week, he’ll compete at three legs of the ASCS Speedweek before returning to Knoxville. Having qualified well all season, an 11th place qualifying effort seemed a bit off. “The air was bad on Saturday,” explains Brian. “It was muggy, and we just weren’t turning the rpm’s that we’re used to turning in qualifying. The way that Knoxville’s format is, eighth quick is about where you want to be, and we weren’t far off that.” The Brian Brown Racing #21 finished where it started in the heat race…third. “We were pretty decent in the heat,” says Brian. “We fell back to fourth there, and were able to get back up to third. We ran the second place car down, so we felt good heading into the A.” The team checked the times of the 360’s and the 410’s as they ran their B mains. “As the night went on, the track was great and actually got faster in places for us,” says Brian. “It definitely wasn’t slowing down like it normally does. We loosened the car a bit and got it better in the center heading into the feature. We knew in clean air that we would be tough to beat.” Brian was good to his word as he took off when the green flag fell and went twenty laps non-stop. “We took off there the first six or eight laps, and they stayed with us pretty well until we got to traffic,” he says. “Traffic has cost us a couple of races this year, and it’s something that I’ve really been concentrating on. It can definitely make or break you. I think we drove it as well as we could have on Saturday.” Wayne Johnson and Kerry Madsen were in pursuit of Brown, but he built his lead to over a ¼ lap by the time the checkers flew. “There are no radios or mirrors, so you don’t know,” he says. “As far as I knew Wayne and Madsen were right on my bumper. I was running every lap like it was my last. The lapped guys didn’t know I was behind them either. Sometimes, that is best because some of them don’t want to get lapped, and you can sneak up and get by them before they know it. You can’t follow them around, or you’ll be next.” The win was Brian’s 13th career 410 triumph at the Sprint Car Capital of the World. “We have definitely been struggling, so this is huge for the team,” he says. “I don’t think we’ve won a weekly show at Knoxville for a year and a half. You start to wonder when or if the next win is coming. It was definitely special to get my first win as a car owner at Knoxville.” Brian looks forward to competing Tuesday night at Creek County Speedway in Sapulpa, Oklahoma, Thursday at the Devil’s Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, Texas, and Friday at the State Fair Speedway in Oklahoma City. All three races are part of ASCS Speedweek. Saturday, he will return to Knoxville. “A lot of the credit goes to Lee Nelson at Ostrich Racing Engines,” says Brian. “Maxim always gives us a great car. It’s just a fun time. We’re looking forward to running with the ASCS this week, and then trying for another one at Knoxville Saturday.” Website

Brian's Q&A Al McCuen from Des Moines asks: You always seem to be there for the kids and fans after the races. Why is that important to you? Brian answers: The kids have always had a special place in my heart, because it wasn’t long ago, that I was one of them. You can’t go to a Major League baseball game, see Albert Pujols hit a home run and go down and shake his hand after the game. That’s the special thing with racing. The rough part last week, was when we came over to the stands to sign autographs. You’re doing it for twenty minutes, and there’s still a long line and you’re being told you have to head back to the pits. Unfortunately, not everyone goes to the pits afterwards, so there were probably kids who didn’t get their autograph. That’s tough. We’ll be back though. Got a question for Brian?
