(Bill W) June 10, 2009 – Billy Alley just wanted to make it through the weekend at Knoxville as best he could. Trying to call on some old Karl Kinser karma with a motor once wrenched on by the legend didn’t quite go as planned. This week, Billy hopes to have his Wesmar power back under the hood as he aims for Knoxville Raceway’s victory lane on Saturday. Though the Lincoln, Nebraska driver had competed with the Kinser motor before at Huset’s, this was its first dance at Knoxville. Billy lost a cylinder in his primary Wesmar powerplant on May 30. Billy Alley Enterprises #22 crew chief, Bob “Buns” Richardson called on the old friend for some fueling advice. “Buns knew Karl from the good old days,” says Billy. “They talked for almost an hour. Karl is into the restored cars now, and I don’t know how much they really talked about the motor. Karl told us if we win with it, not to tell anyone where it came from, because he’s done with this stuff. I don’t think we had to worry about that.” The motor showed its age, with Billy qualifying an uncharacteristic 22nd in the 24-car field. He joked about his time trial lap. “The fuel to the motor was pretty close, but we could have been a little deeper in gear,” he muses. “That may have given us a 15.3 instead of a 15.4 (quick time was 14.7).” A morning of heavy rain resulted in a heavy track all night long, and being low on power was not the recipe for success. Lining up at the back of his heat, Billy pulled it in early. “The track really didn’t mix with what we were handed on Saturday with our back-up motor,” he says. “We needed a dry-slick track, and some nights you get it and some nights you don’t. Saturday, we really needed the dry track, but that’s how it goes.” There was hope that a transfer could be made in the B main, but a first lap melee found Billy with nowhere to go and he hit a flipping Mike Moore head on. Fortunately, the damage was limited to both wings, and with the help of several teams, they were fixed in time for the B. Starting at the rear of the field, he finished one spot out of a transfer. “That deal (first lap) just took us out of it, unfortunately,” he says. “I appreciate all the help the other teams gave us to get back out there though. I think we were fast enough to get the final transfer, but when I thought (Ricky) Montgomery would keep his line a couple times, he just drifted around. It was frustrating, but we’ll move on.” Billy looks forward to things clicking again this weekend at Knoxville. “Our Wesmar should be together for this week,” he says. “I talked to them Saturday night, and as long as all the parts come in, it will be together. We need to get back on track.” Billy’s Mona Vie Team Billy is involved with Mona Vie, and would like you to be as well. Mona Vie has a full line of products that help you maintain a healthy and active lifestyle. “I’m excited to educate others about Mona Vie, because it is a good product,” he says. Mona Vie is adding an energy drink in the next couple of weeks. “I’m really excited about the energy drink we’re coming out with here in another week,” says Billy. “This is going to be a ‘health based’ energy drink, and there aren’t many of those around. If it’s half as effective as the rest of Mona Vie’s products, it’s going to be awesome!” If you are interested in learning how to be a part of Billy’s Mona Vie team, give him a call on Billy’s Mona Vie team line at 402-202-7237. Billy answers: If you know me, you know I need very little to pump me up. I listen to music to calm me down more than anything. The kind of music depends on what kind of mood I’m in that day. Usually, it’s country or rock and roll, but there is a bit of rap thrown in too. Got a question for Billy? Send it to us at sprntcar@iowatelecom.net, and we may answer it in this section!
