Brian Brown – Busy Week Ahead!

(Bill W) July 27, 2009 – After two weeks where things happened beyond his control, taking him out of the point lead at Knoxville, Brian Brown rebounded Saturday with a solid top five finish.  This week, he’ll participate in a pair of shows with the All Star Circuit of Champions before returning to Knoxville on Saturday.

The Brian Brown Racing SuperClean #21 qualified as the 27th car out in the 34-car field on Saturday.  The result was the 13th quickest time of the night.  “We would have rather been around sixth or eighth, but it ended up being a good spot to be in with the invert (12),” says Brian.  “I was a little concerned going out as late as we did, after they qualified the 360’s.”

Brian had it working in the heat race as he won after starting inside row two.  “We’ve been working on some things to get our heat package better before the Nationals,” he says.  “We were able to get by (Garry) Brazier there halfway through, and we were able to drive anywhere we wanted.  We were excited about that.”

Brian fell back to fourth after starting inside row two, but came back to run third by lap seven.  “We didn’t get the best of starts, and fell back to fourth,” he says.  “We were finally able to work back up to third, and we were able to pass Skip (Jackson) for second before a caution came out and sent us back.”

Some of the best racing of the year ensued, with Ricky Logan, Skip Jackson, Dusty Zomer, Don Droud Jr., Kerry Madsen, Terry McCarl and Brian vying for spots within the top five.  “It seemed like we couldn’t get rolling,” says Brian.  “It took about three or four laps to get our tires back going.  We were kind of a sitting duck on those restarts after the yellow flags.  At one point, I thought we were going to win, and at one point I thought we’d be eighth.”

A caution with three to go allowed Brian to pass McCarl for fourth, but was passed on the last circuit, relegating him to fifth.   “Kerry got by us late, and we were able to get by Terry on one of those late restarts,” says the 2007 track champion.  “He got us back in the last corner.  At the white flag, I thought we’d be third, and then we ended up fifth.  I didn’t know where we were going to finish, and I’m sure the fans didn’t, so I’m sure it was a great show for them.”

Brian was complimentary of the racing surface, which at times yielded three solid racing grooves on both ends.  “The Dunkin family did a great job with the track again,” says the Grain Valley, Missouri driver.  “It was as good as it’s been.  It’s really been good the last few weeks.  Hopefully, the weather will cooperate and they can keep doing their job.”

Brian will compete with the All Star Circuit of Champions at the Belleville Highbanks in Belleville, Kansas on Thursday, and the Thunder Hill Raceway in Mayetta, Kansas on Friday before returning to Knoxville on Saturday.

Brian's Q&A

Alan Strovers asks: You haven’t been able to get many 360 shows in lately.  Does that worry you heading into the 360 Nationals?

Brian answers: The schedule has been weird this year.  There hasn’t been a whole lot of 360 stuff going on.  Now we look at July 31, and there are six good paying races around six states.  It’s frustrating that they would all be on the same night, when we’ve gone a few weeks with nothing on Friday.  We could run the 360 at Denison this Friday, but I think we’ll run with the All Stars at Mayetta.  They pay better.  We were fast our last time out in the 360 at I-80, so I think we’ll be ready to go.  I would like to get one more show in, but it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen.

Brown's Bits

Brian’s experience racing with the All Stars is fairly limited, and most of his appearances were in 2003 driving the Casey’s #6.  His best finish in eight feature appearances was a third place run at the Capital Speedway in Holt’s Summit, Missouri on July 25, 2003.  Dean Jacobs won that event, ahead of Jerrod Hull, Brian, Chad Kemenah and Kelly Kinser.
