Brian Brown – Defending Cowtown!

(Bill W) October 6, 2009 – This weekend, sprint car driver Brian Brown will head down to the “Lone Star State” and set up defense of his Cowtown Nationals win from one year ago.  At the time, the event paid $5,000 to win, but the ante has been upped and so has the competition for this year’s edition.  After a flat tire sidelined him last weekend, the Grain Valley, Missouri driver and the SuperClean #21 team are ready to head South.

Brian knows it won’t be easy to duplicate his 2008 last lap pass of Jason Johnson for the win at the Cowtown Speedway south of Kennedale, Texas.  “After having such a good run down there last year, we can’t wait to get there again,” he says.  “It sounds like they’ll have about 70 cars coming in, so it’s not going to be easy.”

In addition to the opportunity to visit with great sponsors, like the folks from Smiley’s Race Products, Brian also appreciates the efforts of those at the banked ¼ mile Cowtown oval.  “(Promoter) Bo (Rawdon) and the guys who work the track do a great job, and Darin Short does a really nice job on the promotional side,” he says.  “Anytime you can get guys like Terry McCarl, Johnny Herrera, Randy Hannagan…and I’m forgetting a bunch more to come to Cowtown to race, you know you’re doing something right.”

Brian and the team look forward to the challenge.  “If we’re going to repeat down there, we definitely need to be on our A game,” he says.  “Chad (Morgan) has been working his butt off to get ready to go down there, and we’ll be ready.  We’re excited!”

Last Friday’s “Shaheen’s Blast from the Past” race for 410’s at the Morgan County Speedway in Jacksonville, Illinois started well enough for Brian.  “The top four qualifiers locked directly into the first two rows of the dash,” he says.  “That made qualifying all the more important.”

Qualifying sixth quick, Brian was forced to run a heat, but he was able to win it and get in the dash.  “We were able to start on the front row of the heat, and win it,” he says.  “We were decent in the heat and in the dash.  We started sixth in the dash, and we were able to run third.  Danny Smith and Terry McCarl were right there in front of us.”

Starting third in the feature, Brian soon found himself chasing McCarl on the banked ¼ mile oval.  “We were able to get into second there behind Terry,” he explains.  “After six or eight laps, I felt the right rear tire starting to go flat.  The car was dragging in the corners, so I knew something was wrong.  About four laps later, we had to pull it in.  I’ve been to Jacksonville four or five times, and I don’t remember finishing a race yet.  We usually run well there, and there’s room to pass, but we have just had some bad luck.”

The DNF has not discouraged the team and they’re looking forward to the Cowtown Nationals running this Friday and Saturday.

Brian's Q&A

Austin Dayton from Oklahoma City, OK asks: Did you think you would win last year’s Cowtown Nationals with five laps to go and chasing Jason Johnson?

Brian answers: We weren’t that good in the beginning of the race.  We were running second, but Jason was stretching it out a little bit on us.  I think our car just got better and better as the race went on and freed up.  His car was coming back to us as he moved to the cushion more and more.  With five laps to go, I thought we had a chance.  With two to go, we were at a dead heat, and then we got him on the last lap.  It was awesome to get a win in the first big event like that.

Brown's Bits

Brian entered the 1st Annual Cowtown Nationals last year having never seen the facility.  Night one saw a heavy, mostly one-lane and scary-fast track, with Brian finishing second behind Gavin Punch.  In the finale, he chased Jason Johnson the distance before reeling him in and making the winning pass on the final lap.  Finishing behind Brian and Jason were Jack Dover, Gary Wright and Wayne Johnson.
