(Bill W) October 14, 2009 – Brian Brown went into the 2nd Annual Cowtown Sprint Nationals hoping to remain the only champion of the event after winning the inaugural running. He did emerge as the only champion in event history, but not because of a win. Mother Nature decided the outcome. This week, he’ll try to grab his first checkered flag at the Devil’s Bowl near Mesquite, Texas with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Series. This year’s event at Cowtown Speedway was first postponed by weather, and was plagued all weekend long. The crew there managed to get all the racing in but the finale. “First and foremost, I’d like to thank Bo (Rawdon) and all the guys at Cowtown,” says Brian. “They were thrown four or five different curveballs with the rain. 99% of the promoters probably would have cancelled, but they stuck with it, probably even when they shouldn’t have. It wasn’t ideal, but they did a great job.” The weather definitely affected the track surface, offering up exciting edge of the seat action for the fans, and a headache for the drivers at times. “It was difficult out there all weekend,” says the Grain Valley, Missouri driver. “The corners were really heavy and the straights were slick. It definitely makes it tough to figure out what the car needs.” Brian benefited from another competitor scratching in front of him for Saturday’s preliminary heat and finished second. “We had a good enough draw starting outside row one in the heat,” he says. “Wayne (Johnson) was a little bit better than we were and we had to settle for second.” With 71 cars in the field, second wasn’t good enough and Brian lined up in row one for the B. “We changed our car around a little bit for the B,” he says. “The changes were good. We were up to second with three or four to go, but we got caught in behind some lapped traffic. That let Jack (Dover) and Danny (Wood) get by me. You have 75 nights. Sometimes you have the luck, and some you don’t. We didn’t on Saturday.” It was time for a fresh start on Sunday afternoon, but the weather wasn’t cooperating. Brian also suffered from a bad draw. “With the forecast for clear skies, we woke up to 50 degrees and drizzle,” he shares. “We started seventh in the heat, and we were able to get up to third. That probably would have been enough, but I hit a hole in turn one and went over the berm. A car snuck by us, and seventh to fourth didn’t cut it.” With a track provisional in his pocket, Brian and crew chief Chad Morgan decided not to run the consolation. In the end, Mother Nature canceled the finale herself. “With the way the track conditions were there after the rain delay, and with the past champion’s provisional in our pocket, we decided to bypass the B and start the feature at the tail,” says Brian. “It didn’t matter anyway with the rain in the end.” Brian is in the Dallas area awaiting Friday and Saturday’s run at the Devil’s Bowl. “We’re looking forward to getting over to the Devil’s Bowl,” he says. “It seems like we’ve been feast or famine there in the past. We’re hoping for a feast this weekend and a trip to victory lane for the SuperClean/FVP #21!”

Brian's Q&A Harold Cowman asks: How much do you communicate with your Uncle, Danny Lasoski, week to week as far as setups, etc.? Brian answers: When I started driving, I did a lot of the same things, but after time passed, I realized there were things that I liked better. We talk a lot, but usually it’s about things other than setup. When we’re at the same track, we may lean a little on him just to make sure we’re in the right ballpark, especially if there’s one lap of qualifying. So we probably do that more at the track than on the phone. Got a question for Brian? Send it to us at sprntcar@iowatelecom.net, and we may answer it in this section!
