LARGEST CAR COUNT IN HISTORY OF 115 CARS PACKED THE
MOUNTAIN-DEW BLOOMFIELD SPEEDWAY FOR WEEK NUMBER FOUR OF FAST TRACK FRIDAY`S
By: Tony Paris
BLOOMFIELD, Ia (May 5, 2006) - The Mountain-Dew Bloomfield Speedway set history
with one hundred and fifteen cars checking in for action on Community First Bank
and Bloomfield Equipment night at the races, with the first ever appearance of
the O`Reilly Auto Parts United States Modified Touring Series at Iowa`s fastest
3/8 mile speedway. The series had a total of fourty-five cars checked in with
ten diffrent states being represented. The crowd also got there money`s worth
with the other four support classes in action.
In the Kollision Korner Hornet feature Tom Irwin of Bloomfield took his first
win of 2006 season breaking the win streak of David Probasco of Moulton who has
won the last two feature in a row. Irwin held off Larry Hopkins of Ottumwa who
took second with Curtis Barnes of Greentop,Mo taking third and Kevin Garrett of
Bloomfield in fourth.
The Kirkland Auto USRA Hobby Stocks had a total of twenty-eight cars checked in
for action with the first B-main event having to be run narrowing the field to
twenty-four starters. The fifteen lap main event proved to be exciting with six
diffrent lead changes with Todd Reitzler of Grinnell making his first ever
apperance at Bloomfield a good one taking the $200 payday and first ever feature
win in the hobby stock division. Reitzler held off several challenges from last
years track champion Ben Jones of Williamsburg who tried several times to make
the pass but settled for the runner-up spot after starting in the eleventh
position. The third and fourth place finishers battled for the final five laps
with Jim Walker of Mystic taking third and Steve Allen of Oskaloosa in fourth.
In the Hougland Repair Shop USRA Stock Car Feature Jason Cook of Mt. Pleasent
topped a twenty-two car field for the second straight week after working his way
from the tenth starting spot. Cook took the lead from Mike Robinson of Moravia
who took the race lead from Eric Flander of Barnes City who lead the first seven
laps before Robinson took the lead working the high side of the speedway. Cook
and Bobby Greiner Jr. of Ottumwa worked there magic thru the field after
starting in the middle of the pack.Greiner Jr. who started in the twelveth
starting spot followed Jason Cook to the front with Cook making the pass on
Robinson on lap thirteen with Greiner following right behind him the two drivers
took the first and second spot with Robinson taking third and Flander taking
fourth.
The USRA B-Modified feature went ffteen laps with Tony Dunker of Quincy,Il.
taking the win holding off Chris Leathers of Macon,Mo. and Jeff Waterman of
Quincy,Il. Leathers along with Kelly Smith of Kirksville,Mo. and Waterman made
for a good battle for the second, third and fourth positions. Waterman took the
second spot followed by Leathers in third and Smith in fourth.
The final feature of the night was the Cars and Stars of the O’Reilly United
States Modified Touring Series with seven time national champ Kelly Shryock of
Fertile,Iowa starting sixth on the grid of the 24-car field taking the green in
the 35-lap Holley "A" main event. Using the low side of the 3/8-mile clay oval,
Shryock methodically picked off competitors as he moved to the front of the
field. On lap 12, Shryock caught race leader Mark Burgtorf and the two veterans
raced side by side for three laps before Shryock secured the top spot on lap
15.A few laps later, Burgtorf suffered a flat left rear tire, causing him to tag
the rear of the field after a visit to his pit area. The Quincy, Ill., pilot
rebounded for a 14th-place finish at the end, while Shryock survived a late-race
caution of Mike Steensma of Luverne,Mn. and Tommy Myer of Blooming Prairie,Mn.
getting together bringing caution out for a four lap shootout. On the restart
Shryock had to deal with the triple nickle machine of Ryan Ruter of Forest City,
Iowa, who restarted behind the three machine of Shryock. The two drivers would
bring the crowd to it`s feet with Shryock running the lowside and Ruter running
the topside with the final lap and final corner deciding who would pocket the
$2000.00 payday with the run off the topside Ruter made a run but Shryock took
the checkers by a nose pocketing the big money after thirty-five laps of action.
Dean Mahlstedt of Clear Lake piolted Tim Echevarria's No. 35 Bullet chassie to a
third place finish, while O’Reilly USMTS current points leader Mark Noble took
fourth -- the eighth top-5 finish in eight starts for the Blooming Prairie,
Minn., ace. Clear Lake, Iowa's Al Hejna rounded out the top 5 finishers.
Zack VanderBeek of New Sharon, Iowa, scored his best finish of the 2006 season
with a sixth-place result, while Jon Tesch of Watertown, S.D., took seventh.
Tesch, who started 19th, earned the Olympic Fire Protection Hard Charger honors.
This weeks racing action will feature six classes in action with the Keith`s
Foods late Modles in action for a $1000.00 win show on Friday night along with
the Kirkland Auto USRA Hobby Stocks,Hougland Repair Shop USRA Stock Cars,Spilman
Auto Parts USRA Modifieds,USRA B-Modifieds and Kollision korner Hornets in
