MOUNTAIN-DEW BLOOMFIELD SPEEDWAY CHECKERS GOTO BURGTORF IN MODIFIED AND
LATE MODEL ON THE SAME NIGHT
By: Tony Paris
BLOOMFIELD, Ia (May 12, 2006) - Night number five of the 2006 racing season was
held with cloudy skies and cool temps the racing action was as hot as ever. The
night was sponsored by Cantril Feed and Grain of Cantril along with Harris
Distributing of West Grove with six classes of cars in action with the long
awaited Keith`s Foods Late Models returning to the fast 3/8 mile speedway for
fast track fridays.
The first feature of the evening was the Kollision Korner Hornet in action with
Tom Irwin of Bloomfield taking the checkers for the second straight week. Irwin
held off David Probasco of Moulton who raced his way from the tenth spot to take
the second spot with Andrew Hustead of Rutledge,Mo. taking third and Bloomfield
driver Gene irwin in fourth.
In the fifteen lap feature of the Kirkland Auto USRA hobby stock feature the
action was red flagged for Oskaloosa driver Steve Allen taking a nasty ride,
flipping five times on the frontstretch and coming to rest on his side in turn
one. Allen was able to getout under his own power and was checked out by the
Davis County Ambulance crew and released but his 3s machine suffered heavy
damage. On the restart Nathan Wood of Sigourney and Ray Lasser Jr. of Ottumwa
lead the field to the green with wood taking the lead and lead till lap five
before Jim Walker of Mystic took the lead and never looked back driving to
victory lane for the first time in 2006. Wood took the second spot with Lasser
in third and Jim Sulser of Centerville battled his way to fourth, after being
involved in a ten car accident on lap eight and worked his way back to a fourth
place finish.
In the USRA B-Modified feature Chris Leathers topped a stellar field finding the
fast way around the 3/8 mile speedway working the high side of the smooth track
to take the checkers. Leathers took the race lead on lap seven of the fifteen
lap event coming from the fourth starting spot. Jeff Waterman and Tony Dunker
battled for the second spot with Waterman in second with Dunker in third and Joe
Hooper of Mendon,Il. taking fourth. This was the largest field for the new class
in 2006 with ten cars checked in for action.
The fourth feature of the night was the Spilman Auto Parts USRA A-Modified
feature going twenty laps with Jeremy Townsend of Bloomfield and Steven Blattler
of Oskaloosa leading the field to the green flag. Blattler and Townsend would
battle for the lead before Blattlers night would come to a end with a flat tire.
Townsend would take the lead til Mark Burgtorf of Quincy,Il. would take the lead
working the highside of the speedway and take home the victory. Townsend would
take the second spot with Brad Pinkerton of New Sharon in third after starting
eleventh and Casey Lancaster of Glenwood,Mo. taking the fourth spot.
One of the toughest feature of the night was the Hougland Repair Shop USRA Stock
Car feature event going eighteen laps with nineteen cars in action. Matt Greiner
of Washington and T.J. Bainbridge of Eldon battled for the early race lead with
the two drivers swapping the lead for the first four laps before Jim Lynch of
Bloomfield found the highside of the speedway along with Howard Gordon Jr. of
Oskaloosa running the lowside and made for some three and sometimes four wide
racing action. All four drivers along with the last two weeks winner Jason Cook
of Mt. Pleasant working his magic from tenth to join in on the battle for the
first, second and third position. Lynch would take the checkers with Jason cook
in second followed by younger brother Ryan Cook in third and Matt Greiner in
fourth.
The final feature of the night was the long awaited return of the big body cars
the Keith`s Foods Late Model division. This was the first of four apperances at
the Mountain-Dew Bloomfield Speedway for the Late Models cars and they put on a
show. The early race lead of Andy Eckrich of Iowa City looked to have things
wrapped up but on lap ten of the twenty lap event. Eckrich`s machine would make
contact with the lap car of Jeff Gerhardt of Nioda,Il. causing heavy damage to
both cars ending the night for both drivers. Thad Trump of Kahoka,Mo. would
restart as the lead and the battle for the the win was on. Trump had to deal
with Jody Wood of Donnellson and Mark Burgtorf of Quincy,Il. who all wanted the
$1000 payday and the win. The three drivers battled for the win with Burgtorf
taking the lead working the highside of the speedway with Wood taking second
followed by Justin Reed of Quincy,Il. taking third and Trump slipping back to
fourth. This was a very exciting race for the first apperance of the Keith`s
Foods Late Model division and look forward to the next three apperances.
