DURBIN DOES ‘THE DEW’
By Tony Paris
BLOOMFIELD, Iowa (June 16, 2006) - The weekly racing action in the USRA Casey's
General Stores Weekly Racing Series resumed on Friday night at the Mountain Dew
Bloomfield Speedway with four classes in action. The Kirkland Auto USRA Hobby
Stocks, Hougland's Repair Shop USRA Stock Cars, Spilman Auto Parts USRA
Modifieds and Kollision Korner Hornet divisions all put on a show with one
first-time winner and the other three drivers visiting victory lane for the
second time.
In the Kollision Korner Hornet feature, Matt Moore of Ottumwa took the race lead
and looked to have his first feature win in hand, but Dale Porter of Floris
worked the high side of the racing surface to close in on Moore. Porter and
Moore battled for the lead over the final three laps, with Porter taking the
checkers followed by Moore in second and the father-son duo of Gene and Tom
Irwin, both of Bloomfield, taking third and fourth, respectively.
The Kirkland Auto USRA Hobby Stock feature was a thriller with Jim Sulser of
Centerville taking the early race lead and looking for his first win, but Ben
Jones of Williamsburg spoiled the night by taking the lead on the 13th lap and
winning his third straight feature event at Bloomfield. The second spot went to
Sulser with Mark Moore of Ottumwa taking third and Dustin Griffiths grabbing
fourth.
In the Hougland's Repair Shop USRA Stock Car feature, Matt Greiner of Washington
and Colt Mather of Webster each drew the front row with the pair battling for
the lead, going wheel-to-wheel and door-to-door to put on a great show for the
fans. Then, Shane Weller of Agency wanted the top spot and made it three wide
several times for the lead. On the final lap and final turn, the three drivers
raced off of turn 4 with Greiner in the lead and Mather in second with Weller in
third. Sparks flew and tires smoked with Greiner and Mather trading paint.
Mather crossed the finish line first with Weller taking second and Greiner in
third. Last week's winner, Jason Cook of Mt. Pleasant, was fourth after coming
from 10th.
The final feature of the night was the Spilman Auto Parts USRA Modified feature
event with Jared Durbin of Fort Madison taking the race lead and leading all 15
laps for his first win after three years in the cockpit. The runner-up spot went
to Michael Long of Quincy, Ill., with Dennis Elliott of Mt. Ayr in third and the
fourth spot going to Jerry Pilcher of Bloomfield. Brandon Banks of Washington
finished fifth. Banks had to work the whole day to get his No. 22 machine back
into race shape after crashing on Thursday night. The hard work paid off with
another great run by the young driver.
Next Friday, June 23, Elmer Wood Company presents the USRA Casey’s General
Stores Weekly Racing Series featuring five fast & furious classes, including
Spilman Auto Parts Modifieds, Hougland's Repair Shop Stock Cars, Kirkland Auto
Hobby Stocks and Kollision Korner Hornets. Admission is $9 for adults, with
