By:Tony Paris

BLOOMFIELD, IA (July 14, 2006) - The 2006 Davis County Fair took place with two nights of racing action scheduled with the Ideal Ready Mix Sprint Invaders and Mid-America 305 Winged Sprints with the look of rain the program went on but mother-nature would spoil the party with heavy rain coming down forcing the action to be cancelled. With around 2.60" of rain coming it looked like the Friday night program would be cancelled but the sunshine help dry things out and the racing action was held on Friday night sponsored by Davis County Savings Bank of Bloomfield. The young race fans go to take part in the annual nickel scramble put on by the bank. Each young race fan from age new born to twelve years of age got some money.

All four feature had already made it to victory lane in 2006 but the fair checkers is always something nice to add to the trophy case. In the first feature the Spilman Auto Part USRA Modifieds took the green flag with hometown driver Jim Lynch working the high side of the track and took the lead with shiny new black body but still the 77 on board he scored the win over Dennis Elliott of Mt. Ayr the current point leader who took second after coming from sixth. The third spot went to Jared Durbin of Ft. Madison who battled with Lynch early but fell back to third and Jerry Pilcher of Bloomfield taking the fourth spot.

The Kollision Korner Hornet feature had thirteen drivers taking the green for ten laps with the number 77 of David Probasco coming to victory lane following the 77 modified who had just picked up the win earlier with the same car number. Dale Porter of Floris battled his way from eight to second with Tom Irwin of Bloomfield taking the third spot after battling with Charlie Montgomery of Delta who made his first appearance in the hornet division taking home the fourth spot.

In the third feature the always thrilling Hougland Repair Shop USRA Stock Car Feature rolled onto the speedway for the eighteen lap main event with Pat Rachels of Knoxville and Jim Lynch of Bloomfield leading the field to the green. Lynch took the early race lead and looked to have the 77 machine headed to victory lane and trying to make it the third car in a row to win with the same number, but Shane Weller of Agency worked his way from seventh to battle for the lead. The two drivers would go wheel-to-wheel for the lead. The 78r machine of Mike Robinson and the 27R of Ryan Cook joined into the battle making it three and four wide several times. The 20W machine of Weller would power his machine away from the others and build a four car length lead. The battle for the second spot heated up with Phil McClure along with the three drivers of Rachels,Robinson and Ryan Cook all going door-to-door and wheel-to-wheel for the runner-up spot. Lynch`s machine would retire with a flat tire after making contact with the outside front stretch wall. The three and four wide racing would also include the 8 machine of Colt Mather making it four cars all wanting the second spot. Weller would cruise to victory lane for his first win at the Mountain-Dew Bloomfield Speedway. The tightly contested battle for second went to Rachels with Phil McClure taking third with a last lap pass on Ryan Cook who took fourth and Robinson and Mather taking fifth and sixth. This was one of the most thrilling feature of the 2006 season with twenty-one of some of the best stock cars putting on a show.

The final feature of the night was the Kirkland Auto USRA Hobby Stock Feature going fifteen laps with Bob Lynch of Ottumwa driving the Jeff Finley owned machine setting on the pole position with Dustin Griffiths of Ottumwa on the outside. The two drivers would bring the field to the green with the two battling for the topspot. Griffiths who made the twenty-three our trip back from Florida so he could race the Davis County Fair. Lynch and Griffths would battle for the lead swapping the lead several times before Nathan Wood of Sigourney joined the two for a three way battle for the topspot. The 42 machine of Ben Jones of Williamsburg would make a charge from the tenth starting spot after scoring the win in last weeks feature. Wood would build a six to seven car length lead over the field with Griffiths, Jones and Jimmy Hayes of Moravia all battling for the second and third spot. Lynch would drift back to fifth with Griffiths hanging onto the second spot with Jones taking third and Hayes taking fourth in his first appearance of 2006. This win was Wood`s sixteenth feature win in the the USRA hobby stock division. After the feature the 28M machine of Lance Meyer claimed the Carburetor of Ben Jones and Jones did agree to sell.
