JONES TAKES $1,000 USRA HOBBY STOCK WIN AT MOUNTAIN DEW
BLOOMFIELD SPEEDWAY
By Tony Paris
BLOOMFIELD, IA (July 28, 2006) - On the final Friday night in July, fans at the
Mountain Dew Bloomfield Speedway were treated to Fan Appreciation Night
presented by Taylor Automotive and Missouri Grain. The class with the most cars
got to race for $1,000 to win and $100 to start, with the action sponsored by
Corporate Auto of Ottumwa and Sonic Drive In of Ottumwa and Centerville. The
Kirkland Auto USRA Hobby Stock division was the featured class and ran for the
big money after bringing 25 cars to the Davis County Fairgrounds in Bloomfield,
Iowa.
The first feature was the Hougland's Repair Shop USRA Stock Cars thrilling the
crowd with three- and four-wide racing between four drivers battling for the top
spot. The 18-lap feature came down to the final lap with Colt Mather and Ryan
Cook battling for the win after Matt Greiner, who was a contender until a cut
right front tire with two laps remaining ended his run at the win. Pat Rachels
was another driver in the hunt for the win but slipped back to finished fourth,
while Mather and Cook raced wheel-to-wheel and door-to-door with only six inches
deciding the outcome when the checkers flew. Mather took the win with Cook in a
close second, followed by brother Jason Cook taking third. This class always
seems to thrill the fans each and every week with some of the closest finishes
in 2006.
In the Kollision Korner Hornet division, 15-year-old Sarah Woodhurst of Perry,
Mo., showed the guys who to get it done, topping the field after leading all
eight laps for her first win at the Mountain Dew Bloomfield Speedway in just her
second appearance. Tom Irwin took the second spot with Dale Porter working his
way from eighth to take third and David Probasco grabbing fourth.
The third feature of the night was the Spilman Auto Parts USRA Modifieds taking
the green for 18 laps of exciting action with seven different lead changes
between Dennis Elliott, Tony Fraise and Mark Burgtorf. Fraise and Burgtorf
swapped the lead several times before Fraise's machine broke a rear J-bar
bracket, almost sending Fraise upside down, but the veteran racer settled the
car down and retired to the pits off turn 4 and ended his run. That turned the
lead over to Burgtorf, who would paced the final seven laps for the win. Zack
VanderBeek tried to close the gap but settled for second with Elliott taking
third and Jared Durbin finishing fourth. Coming into the night, Elliott and
Durbin were only separated by only five points. The two finished in the third
and fourth positions to keep a close battle for the track title heating up with
only three regular points nights remaining.
The final feature of the evening was the $1,000-to-win Kirkland Auto USRA Hobby
Stock main event going 18 laps with Ben Jones leading every lap for his biggest
payday ever. The battle for the second spot was between Robby Sands and Nathan
Wood, with Wood taking the second spot and $700 after coming from the 10th
starting position. Sands scored his best finish and payday of $500 for third and
Dustin Griffiths, who took fourth after having a flat tire on the sixth lap and
raced his way from the back of the 24-car field, finished and pocketed $400 for
his efforts.
Next week (Friday, Aug. 4) will be regular track points and national points for
the USRA Casey's General Stores Weekly Racing Series featuring the Kirkland Auto
USRA Hobby Stocks and Hougland's Repair shop USRA Stock Cars joining the second
appearance of the season by the O’Reilly Auto Parts United States Modified
Touring Series (USMTS) in action at the Mountain Dew Bloomfield Speedway.
Drivers from Kansas, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Missouri, Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota,
Wisconsin and South Dakota are expected.
Hot laps start at 7 p.m. and the mud flies soon thereafter.
The Mountain Dew Bloomfield Speedway is located one mile west of Bloomfield on
US 63/SR 2, then one mile north on CR J40 (at the Davis County Fairgrounds).
