ELLIOTT, COOK, WOOD, PORTER GARNER 2006 TRACK TITLES AT
MOUNTAIN DEW BLOOMFIELD SPEEDWAY
BLOOMFIELD, IA. (Sept. 7, 2006) - The 2006 season came to a close on Friday,
Aug. 25, at the Mountain Dew Bloomfield Speedway with four drivers emerging as
USRA Casey's General Stores Weekly Racing Series track champions for 2006 at the
Bloomfield, Iowa, speedplant.
Jared Durbin of Fort Madison and Dennis Elliott of Mt. Ayr came into the final
event of the season for the Spilman Auto Parts USRA Modifieds with the points
championship up for grabs. After passing two cars late in the main event,
Elliott finished ninth and gave himself just enough points to capture the track
title by six markers over Durbin. Although he recorded no feature wins during
the season, Elliott was consistent with nine top-5 finishes to his credit.
Rookie Brandon Banks of Washington finished third in the final rankings,
followed by Casey Lancaster of Glenwood, Mo., in fourth and Bloomfield's Jerry
Pilcher fifth.
The Hougland's Repair Shop USRA Stock Cars came down to a sibling rivalry with
Jason Cook of Mt. Pleasant holding off his brother, Ryan, by 70 points (13777 to
1307) for the title. Mike Harward of Bloomfield finished third behind the West
Point pilot, while rookie Colt Mather of Webster finished fourth. Tyler McClure
of Floris wound up fifth in the final standings.
Nathan Wood of Sigourney wrapped up the Kirkland Auto USRA Hobby Stock crown
when he signed in on the final night. Wood captured four checkered flags and
seven runner-up finishes throughout 2006 to clinch the title and add to his lead
in the national standings for the USRA Casey's General Stores Weekly Racing
Series. Jim Sulser of Centerville inherited the runner-up spot in the final
points standings when Ben Jones of Williamsburg refused technical inspection
after the final main event of the season. Jones, who won nine features including
the season finale, forfeited all of his points earned for the season. Jim Walker
of Mystic wound up third in the final points, followed by Derek Kirkland of
Centerville and Ottumwa's Ray Lasser Jr.
Dale Porter of Floris also had his track championship in the bag before the
final race of the season, but went on to win the last main event of the year --
his sixth overall -- and pad his advantage in the Kollision Korner Hornets.
Kevin Garrett of Bloomfield finished second in the final points, followed by
Gene Irwin of Bloomfield, Ottumwa's Larry Hopkins and Tom Irwin of Bloomfield.
Next up will the Pizza Hut Fall Festival with two big days of action featuring
the final appearances of the season by the Spilman Auto Parts USRA Modifieds,
Hougland's Repair Shop USRA Stock Cars, Kirkland Auto USRA Hobby Stocks and
Kollision Korner Hornets on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 6-7. Both days, gates open
5 p.m. with hot laps at 7:15 and racing at 7:30.
