TRAVIS FINKE SCORES FIRST 2006 WIN
TIPPS, REES, AND METZGER REPEAT
COLUMBUS JUNCTION, Ia. (May 5, 2006) - Travis Finke picked up his first
IMCA feature win of 2006 after mechanical problems took him out of contention
the first three weeks. Brian Tipps, Mike Rees, and Jody Metzger repeated. Rod
Summy picked up his second win of the season after two tough weeks, being
collected in a wreck two weeks ago, and rolling a back up car last week.
The IMCA Stock car feature saw three wide racing as soon as the green dropped
and going through turns 1 and 2, causing a wreck coming out of turn 2. On the
original restart, Travis Finke made it three wide going between Cole Simmons and
Patrick Mincer coming out of turn 2 and taking the lead. Patrick Mincer followed
in second and Brandon Jay in third. One lap later Jay took second with Rod
Staats following in third. Tad Payne was running in fourth when Rod Staats was
held up by lapped traffic, causing him to slide back. Finke holds on to pick up
his first 2006 win, Jay takes second, with Tad Payne breaking his
second place finish streak (3 for 3) and slipping into third. Payne maintains
the point lead and the battle heats up behind him with Summy in second and three
way tie for third between Rod Staats, Brandon Jay, and Travis Finke.
Brian Tipps led the entire 4 cylinder feature picking up the win and making it
two in a row. Randy Foor was holding the second place spot for the first few
laps when a caution was out for Larry Koehler rolling in turn 4. Jarrod
McMichael used the restart to go from fifth to second in his first appearance at
the CJ Raceway this year. McMichael challenged Tipps for the lead for the next
five laps, but Tipps was able to hold him off. Tipps takes the checkers with
McMichael in second, and Foor in third. Wayne Nolbe maintains the point lead.
Brad Ewart was out front for the hobby stock feature with Mike Rees in second
and Dustin Bliven in third. On lap 4, Rees went outside going into turn 3 to
pass Ewart for first. Dustin Bliven got around Ewart also, but a caution came
out for Craig Lamb and Brian Holmes in turn 4, putting Ewart back in escond. On
the restart, Bliven is able to make the pass stick though, taking over second.
Rees went on to win for the second week in a row, with Bliven taking second, and
Darrin Ealey in third. However, Darrin Ealey and fourth place finisher Mike
Cassabaum were disqualifed in tech. Brad Ewart who had slipped back throughout
the race moves into third. Mike Rees breaks the tie and takes the point lead.
Fresh off his first late model feature win last week, Jody Metzger used his
outside first row starting position to take the point in the late model feature.
Michael Dominguez followed in second with Hal Russell in third. Metzger
continued to pull away, picking up his second feature win in a row. Dominguez
took second, his highest career feature finish, with Hal Russell in third. Jeff
Guengerich is the point leader. Ron Boyse received the Pepsi Draw Award with
Jeff Guengerich taking the Pepsi Hard Charger.
Rod Summy had a rough couple of weeks sustaining substantial damage in a wreck
two weeks before causing him to run a back up car last week, and rolling on the
first lap. His luck changed though as he lead the entire CJ Cruiser feature,
picking up his second feature win of the season. Billy Faler was out front with
Summy when he went around in front of the entire pack in turn 4, amazingly
avoiding contact with the rest of the field. He was able to keep going, avoiding
the caution, but ending up at the back of the back. He charged his way back up
to third, before going over in turns 3 and 4, driving back on the track,
avoiding another caution, but losing multiple spots. Summy takes the win, Josh
Mohror follows in second, Matt Gomez third, and Faler makes his way back up to
fourth. Gomez maintains the point lead.
CJ Raceway Relay For Life Favorite Driver for the IMCA Stock Car class will be
next week.
