DARBYSHIRE TAKES CHECKERS AT CJ RACEWAY
COLUMBUS JUNCTION, IA. (July 7, 2006) - Stitches & Cream Night at CJ Raceway saw
Tom Darbyshire pick up the late model feature win in just his second appearance
there this year. Familiar faces Brian Tipps, Dustin Bliven, Tad Payne, and Billy
Faler visit victory lane.
Mick Wiele and Brian Hetzler made up the front row for the Pepsi late model
feature with Hetzler taking the lead and Wiele following in second for the first
two laps, but Jay Chenoweth soon took over second with Tom Darbyshire following
in third. On lap 7 coming out of turn 4, Darbyshire took the second place
position from Chenoweth. One lap later Darbyshire took the lead from Hetzler,
also coming out of turn 4, but making it stick on the front stretch. Hetzler
then went over in turns 1 and 2, pulling a caution. On the restart it's
Darbyshire, Chenoweth, and Hal Russell. A caution came out for Todd Hormel in
turn 4 on lap 15 with another one on lap 16 for Mick Wiele in 1 and 2, but
Darbyshire was able to fight them off on the restart to pick up his first
feature win of 2006 at CJ Raceway. He also received the Pepsi Hard Charger
Award. Chenoweth took second and Russell third.
Daniel Keltner led the first two laps of the 4 cylinder feature before Brian
Tipps made his way to the point. Keltner fell behind in second with James Malcom
in third, but two laps later Andrew Theobald took over the third position before
advancing to second one lap later. Tipps made his sixth trip to victory lane
with A. Theobald taking second, and Keltner in third.
Dustin Bliven had the lead in the hobby stock feature by lap 2 with Brian Holmes
in second. Mike Cassabaum and Darrin Ealey were battling for third coming out of
turn 4 when contact was made, sending Ealey around and towards the tower. Ealey
was done for the night and Cassbaum was sent to the back of the pack. On the
restart it was Bliven, Holmes, Brad Ewart, and Mark Winkel, but Winkel used the
restart to take the third place spot. Bliven held off the pack to pick up his
third feature win with Holmes taking second, and Winkel in third.
Cole Simmons was out front in the IMCA feature with Shelly Mizell in second when
Simmons pulled the caution in turn 4. Mizell had the lead on the restart with
Tad Payne in second. Six laps later Mizell got a flat, moving Payne into the
lead. Rod Staats followed in second with David Hemsted in third. They held on
for the rest of the race, taking the checkers with Payne picking up his second
feature win, Staats taking second, and Hemsted in third.
Last week's feature winner Darren Wilson was out front in the CJ Cruiser feature
with Billy Faler in second and Brett Timmerman in third. A caution was out on
lap 3 for Ryan Buffington on the levy. On the restart it's Wilson, Faler, and
Timmerman and would stay this way until coming around for lap 6 when Faler took
the lead. Faler went on to pick up his fourth feature win, Wilson took second,
and Timmerman third.
