Track veterans are new promoters at CJ Speedway
COLUMBUS JUNCTION, Iowa (Jan. 19) – The new promotional team at CJ Speedway
already knows its way around the 4/10-mile dirt oval.
Don and Sharon Wood, their daughter Amanda Tipps and her husband Brian will
oversee Friday night shows at Columbus Junction, where IMCA Sunoco Stock
Cars will run regularly for a 14th consecutive season.
Don’s racing career included stints in the street stock and late model
classes at the former Louisa County Speedway.
Amanda piloted a go-kart and four cylinder car, and Brian campaigned there
in the 2-man cruisers, four cylinders and hobby stocks. The couple owns the
rare distinction of having won feature events in their respective divisions
on the same night two years ago.
“One of the things I liked most about this track when I raced here is that
it’s very fast,” said Wood, looking to provide the same speedy surface for
competitors starting this spring.
Rainouts and flooding kayoed all but a handful of events at CJ in 2008. The
new promoters, with volunteer help, were able to start cleaning up and more
importantly spraying the poison ivy, before cold weather set in.
“We had dirt moved in on turns one and two to restore the banking and we’ll
do three and four next year,” Wood said. “We have some painting to do and
need to get billboards built and up.”
Points earned at CJ Speedway will apply in the Jet Racing Northern Region.
Opening night is April 24, with points races scheduled through Sept. 4..
