Hanford, Hemsted, Timmerman, Walker and Gavin take wins in CJ Speedway season open
By Dana Royer/CJ Speedway

COLUMBUS JUNCTION, IA (April 24) - The weather couldnšt have been any better for the season opener of CJ Speedway last Friday, April 24 and the fans came out to support and cheer on their favorite drivers. Under the new promotership of Don and Sharon Wood and Brian and Amanda Tipps, five classes of racing took to the track including IMCA Stock Cars, Modifieds, Mod Lites, Hobby Stocks and 4 cylinders. Getting wins in the tracks first night of action would be David Hemsted, Lone Tree (IMCA Stock Cars), Matt Gavin , Kirkwood, Il., (Hobby Stocks), Bruce Hanford, Davenport (Modifieds), Brett Timmerman, Wapello ( 4
cylinders) and Scott Walker (Mod lites).

The evening began on Ron Kirkpatrick Memorial Night with his daughter Shelly Mizzel giving and emotional tribute to her father. She then took a lap around the track in her #36 IMCA Stock Car in his memory of her father ,who passed way last year, with applause coming from the stands. Ron was a huge supporter of racing, The 2008 Miss Muscatine performed the National Anthem and it was time to go racing.

The IMCA Stock Cars took to the track for the first feature of the evening with David Hemsted and Travis Finke on the front row. Hemstead took the early lead in the sixteen car field and began to pull away from the field. A caution on lap twelve of the fifteen lap race closed the gap for Trent Vrchoticky, who was running in second, with a battle for third going on between Tad Payne and Jim. Try as he did, Vrchoticky wouldnšt be able to catch Hemstead as he took the checkered flag for his first win this year at CJ.

Next to the take to the track were a small but mightly field of hobby stocks. Matt Gavin of Kirkwood, Illinois is not unfamiliar with taking the checkered flags coming off a track championship at 34 Raceway in Burlington last year. Gavin took the early lead and pulled away from the field. Lane Kauffman finished second followed by Jason Hartman, Bryar Keltner and Billy Faler. Word is next weekšs race will see in increase in the class and can Gavin get a repeat win.

Bruce Hanford, Davenport, has been involved in racing for several years with many victories to his name. Friday, Hanford continued his winning ways taking the checkered flag in the modified twelve lap feature. Hanford started on the front row along side Larry Herring and by lap five began to pull away to go on and get his first win at CJ this year. Herring finished second followed by Adam Bell and Daniel Brockert to round out the top five.

A nice field of Mod Lites were on hand with seventeen cars starting their feature race. Jeff Miller and Scott Walker lead the field around the track
for the start of the green with Walker taking the early lead. A three way
battle for the lead kept the fans entertained with Walker able to stay in the lead throughout the twelve lapper. On the final lap of the race Benny Burnett would challenge Walker but as they came out of turn four, Burnett got too high and hit the wall flipping the car as the checkered flag came out for Walker. Burnett walked away from the crash as Rob Guss and Jeff Miller finished second and third.

The 4 Cylinder action kept the fans on the edge of their seats in an exciting three way finish, Twenty three cars set the field with Jordan Tipps and Johh Whalen on the front row. Tipps quickly took the early lead followed by Brett Timmerman who started in row four. Timmerman would get by Tipps one lap later for the lead followed by Bill Whalen, Jr. Moving his way up through the field was Wayne Noble. By lap seven, Noble had closed in on the leaders from his fifth row start making for a three way battle for the lead between Timmerman, Whalen and Noble. With two laps to go the three raced side by side, bumper to bumper. On the final lap of the ten lap race all eyes were on the leaders as they passed the finish line/flag stand three wide. Wapellošs Brett Timmerman was declared the winner in a race that left some unsure of who won until it was announced, the finish was that close.

Racing action will continue next Friday, May 1 with point races in all classes and as the CJ Speedway/34 Raceway Duel on Dirt continues for the IMCA Stock Cars and Hobby Stocks. Hot laps are at 7:00 with racing beginning at 7:30.
