COLUMBUS JUNCTION, IA ( May 29) After three weeks of rainouts for point race action at the CJ Speedway in Columbus Junction, race fans and drivers were finally able to get backing action on Friday, May 29. Under new promotership this year the second week of action drew added cars to the 4/10 mile with over 70 cars competing in five classes. Winners for the evening included Billy Faler, Columbus Junction (hobby stocks), Tyler Whalen, Riverside (4 cylinders), Jason Masengarb, Colona, Il., (mod lites), Darin Ealy, Wapello (IMCA Stock Cars) and Steve Stewart, Burlington (Modifieds). Tyler Whalen, Riverside got his first win of the year at the CJ Speedway topping the sixteen car field. Whalen took the lead from his front row start at the drop of the green pulling way from the field by lap three. Wapellošs Wayne Noble moved up to the second spot from his mid field start passing Jordon Tipps on lap six of the ten lap feature to finish second. Tipps finished third and Ryan Walker fourth. Noble, earlier in the evening, won the 4 Cylinder Dash for Cash race sponsored by Whalen Racing. A nice field of sixteen Mod Lites took to the track for its twelve lap feature with Jason Masengarb, Colona, Il taking the checkered flag. Masengarb took the early lead from his front row start but would get passed by Justin Buchholz two laps later. Buchholz led the next eight laps before he got too high in turn three Masengarb took advantage of the mistake and got the lead back with just two laps to go. Masengarb was able to hold off Buchholz at the end and took the checkered flag for the win by only a couple car lengths. Buchholz finished second followed by Robert Guss and Darrin Norton. Darin Ealy, Wapello won his first IMCA Stock Car feature holding off Tad Payne, Muscatine for the win in the sixteen car, twelve lap feature.. Ealy took the early lead pulling away from the field early on with the battle for second going on between Payne and Randy Phillips early on. After a caution on lap ten the field was closed on the restart with Ealy in the lead followed by Payne and Hemsted. Another caution on the final lap made for a green, white, checkered finish. Ealy held his lead while Payne and Vrchoticky, who had taken over third, battled side by side on the back stretch. Ealy took the checkered flag with Payne winning the battle for second. The hobby stock feature saw Billy Faler, Columbus Junction getting his first win this year. The small field of cars still provided plenty of excitement with a four way battle for the lead. Faler took the lead from the start and held off Lane Kauffman for the win. The modified action saw a double in car count from the first race that saw Bruce Hanford taking the win. This week twelve cars were on hand for the open wheel action with Burlingtonšs Steve Stewart getting the win. Stewart took the lead from Daniel Brockert on lap two of the twelve lap race. By the final lap, Hanford, starting on the third row moved into second and was closing on Stewart. Hanford would not be able to Stewart and had to settle for second as Stewart took the checkered flag. Hanford finished second followed by Brockert and Alex Buffington.
