COLUMBUS JUNCTION, IA (June 8) - Again this week CJ Speedway drew over seventy cars to compete in the five classes of racing action on Friday, June 5. Winners June 5 were Luke McLaughlin, Mediapolis (hobby stocks), Justin Buchholz, Pleasant Hill, (mod lites), Tyler Whalen, Riverside (4 cylinders), Steve Stewart, Burlington (modifieds) and Aaron Summy, Illinois City, Il., (IMCA stock cars). Some new faces were seen this week in the hobby stock division with Mediapolisš Luke McLaughlin getting the win. McLaughlin took the lead at the drop of the green and would pull away from the field early on. Eric Rowley moved into second followed by Lane Kauffman. A caution on the final lap came out and closed the gap McLaughlin had held. The caution gave Kaufmann, who had moved in to second, a shot at the leader but McLaughlin was too fast and went on to take the checkered flag. Kauffman had to settle for second followed by Jason Hartmon and Bryar Keltner in the top four. A nice field of Mod Lites were on hand again with Justin Buchholz getting his second win this year. Buchholz took the lead from Jeff Miller on the second lap of the feature and would pull away from the field. With Buchholz out in front the battle for third would go on between Jeff Miller, Scott Walker and Daniel Keltner. The only yellow of the race would come out on lap four and Scott Walker would take over the second spot with his sights set on the leader. But Buchholz would again pull away from the field of fifteen cars and went on to take the win. Fifteen 4 cylinders took to the track with Cory Sheetz and Tyler Whalen on the front row. Coming off a win last week, Whalen took the early lead and would begin to pull away from the field. But moving up from a mid field start was T.J. Garrison. Whalen and Garrison would battle for the lead racing bumper to bumper and side by side for several lap. On lap eight of the ten lap race, Garrison went to the inside of Whalen in turn three but couldnšt complete the move. The two raced bumper to bumper for the next two laps with Whalen holding off Garrisonšs challenge for the win. Darrin Smith, Bill Whalen and Andrew Theobald rounded out the top five. Steve Stewart, Burlington, made it two in a row in the modified division winning the modified feature event. Todd Hansen took the early lead of the race pulling away from the field early on. But when the only yellow flag caution of the race came out on lap nine the gap was closed and Steve Stewart moved into the second spot on the restart. It didnšt take long for Stewart to get by Hansen going to the inside of the leader in turn two for the second lead change of the race. With three laps to go, Bruce Hanford was moving up fast taking over the number three spot from his fifth row start. With Stewart in the lead Hansen had to work to hold off Hanford as they raced side by side on the back stretch. Hanford tried to pass Hansen on the final lap but couldnšt complete the move to finish third as Stewart took the checkered flag. The IMCA Stock Car feature was a thriller with seventeen of the twenty cars entered starting the feature race. Jim Red took the early lead from his second row start. After a red flag stop in the action when Wapellošs Wayne Noble flipped several times going over turn three, Brandon Jay took advantage of the restart taking over the lead on lap four. Jay worked to hold off Aaron Summy for the next two laps before Summy would get by Jay for the second lead of the race. Summy continued to hold his lead with a battle for second going on behind him between Trent Vrchoticky and Tad Payne. Vrchoticky would move into second and closed in on the leader. The two raced bumper to bumper for the next two laps but Summy would begin to get a little breathing room. Vrchoticky would then have to work to hold off Payne as Summy took the checkered flag for his first win. Racing action will continue this Friday at CJ Speedway in June 12 with racing in all five classes. Mark your calendars for Friday, July 3 for the the Firecracker 25 sponsored by Wapello Auto Parts. $600 will be added to the 25 lap IMCA Stock Car feature paying $500 for the win.
