by Dana Royer/CJ Speedway

COLUMBUS JUNCTION, IA ( July 3) -After three weeks of cancellations due to weather it was back to racing action at Columbus Junction's CJ Speedway Friday, July 3 with the Wapello Auto Parts Firecracker 25. $500 went to the winner of the IMCA Stock Car 25 lap feature. Also competing were the Modifieds, Mod Lites and 4 cylinders. Children were treated to a candy dash and fans got a jump start on the 4th of July celebration with fireworks after the races.  A light rain delayed the action following three heats of racing. When the rain let up the track was worked in for racing to resume with more heat race action and the feature events. The final feature of the night was the modifieds but rain started again and the race had to be stopped. Winners July 3 were Jim Redmann (stock cars), Lockridge, Ia, Tyler Whalen, (4 cylinders), Ainsworth and Troy Philpott, (mod lites), Muscatine.

Next week at CJ Speedway will be Mid Season Championship Night, Friday, July 10 on 93.1 MAC FM night with racing in all five classes and double features for modifieds. Li'l Racers Club will be holding their second Box Car night, so kids, get your cars ready.

The mod lites took to the track for the first feature of the evening with Troy Philpott taking the early lead.  With three laps to go in the ten lap feature, Philpott held a substantial lead as Justin Buchholz got by  Daniel Kelter for second. Both Philpott and Buchholz would pull away from the field as Philpott got his first win this year. Buchholz finished second followed by Daniel Keltner, Todd Hansen and Jeff Miller rounding out the top five.

The main attraction for the evening was the 25 lap IMCA Stock Car Firecracker 25 with 19 cars setting the field. Brett Timmerman and Travis Finke led the field to the start flag with Brett Timmerman taking the early lead. Timmerman led the field around the 4/10 mile for the next four laps before giving it up to Jim Redmann who starting in the tenth row.  Redmann would put some space between him and Timmerman who was battleing Trent Vrchoticky and Brian Holmes for second. When the fourth caution of the night came out  on lap fourteen the field was closed up and Vrchoticky would challenge Redmann for the lead racing bumper to bumper for the final laps.

Again the yellow flag would come out with three laps to go making for a dash to the flag. A three way battle for the lead gave the fans an exciting finish with Redmann, David Hemsted and Vrchoticky. Lap twentyfour saw Vrchoticky and Redmann side by side on the back stretch with Hemsted right behind the leaders. As they passed in front of the stands it was Redmann and Hemsted side by side with Redmann taking the win by half a car length.

Vrchoticky finished third followed by Rod Staats and Brian Holmes.

"I didn't think we were going to get to race and the track turned out great"

said three time winner Tyler Whalen following winners pictures for the 4 cylinders. Whalen took the lead on lap three of the sixteen car 4 cylinder feature and would pull away for the win in the ten lap feature. TJ Garrison battled Geoff Theobald for second throughout the feature.
