Hanford is 2 for 2 at CJ Speedway
By Dana Royer/CJ Speedway

COLUMBUS JUNCTION, IA (7-17-09) Bruce Hanford, Davenport, went home a double winner Friday, July 17 after winning both a make  up modified feature from July 3 and the Louisa Communications/I-Wireless Mid Season Championship Modified feature later that night. Also getting wins were Trent Vrchoticky, Fredonia (IMCA Stock Cars), Justin Buchholz, Pleasant Hill (mod lites), Luke McLaughlin, Mediapolis (hobby stocks) and Geoff Theobald, Wapello (4 cylinders). Besides the racing action the Lil Racer Car Club had plenty of activities for the kids included a gunny sack race, Gunny the Clown making balloon shapes and painting faces and a candy dash courtesy of Clayton and Jeff Jenson.

It was Louisa Communications/I Wireless Mid Season Championship night at CJ Speedway saw the modifieds taking to the track first to make up a rained out July 3 modified feature.  Tim Sands took the early lead at the drop of the green in the fifteen lap race only to give it up one lap later to Todd Hansen on lap two. Hansen led the field around the circuit for the next six laps while Hanford was working his way closer to the leader. Hanford pulled up along side Sands on lap seven but couldn¹t make the pass. Then on lap nine, Sands got a little loose coming out of turn three and Hanford took advantage passing Sands for the lead. Hanford would pull away from the field and went on to take the checkered flag followed by Hansen, Adam Bell, Mark Winkel and Doug Pratt rounding out the top five.

Later in the evening the modifieds would again take to the track for feature number two. Staring from point position Hanford would pull away from the field from his front row start working his way through the lap traffic. He went on to take the checkered flag followed by Adam Bell, Steve Stewart and Todd Hansen in the fifteen lap race.

Luke McLaughlin, Mediapolis, got his second hobby stock win this year.

McLaughlin took the lead from Lane Kauffman on lap five of the ten lap feature and would pull away from the field to take the checkered flag by several car lengths. Kauffman finished second followed by Sky Griffith, Billy Faler and Eric Rowley.

A nice field of seventeen Mod Lites, led by Justin Buchholz and Jeff Miller took the checkered flag in the twelve lap feature. Buchholz took the early lead and would pull away from the field with a battle between Troy Phillpott and Scott Walker going on behind him. With Buchholz in the lead, Phillpot would pass Walker in turn two taking over the second spot and would follow Buchholz across the finish line to take second. Walker would settle for third followed by Todd Hansen and Jeff Miller as Buchholz took the checkered flag.

Eighteen cars set the field for the IMCA Stock Car feature with Trent Vrchoticky and David Hemsted on the front row as they lined up by points.

Vrchoticky took the lead at the drop of the green with a four way battle for the lead would ensuing with Vrchoticky, Hemsted, Tad Payne and Aaron  Summy.

On the final lap of the time called race due to several cautions, Hemsted would pull up to Vrchoticky¹s bumper on the back stretch but couldn¹t make the pass as Vrochoticky took the checkered flag for his first win. Hemsted would finish fourth followed by Tad Payne, Aaron Summy and Les Blakey.

Coming off a win last week at Burlington, Wapello¹s Geoff Theobald would make it two for two getting his second 4 cylinder win for the week. Theobald took the lead from John Whalen on lap four following a caution and would pull away in the fourteen car field. Tyler Whalen would take over the second spot  on lap five and settle for second this week finishing behind Theobald.

John Whalen, Bill Whalen and Darrin Smith would follow  rounding out the top five.
