Morrill, Chandler and Theobald winners at CJ Speedway Fair Shootout
By Dana Royer/CJ Speedway

COLUMBUS JUNCTION, IA (July 29) – CJ Speedway hosted its “Fair Shootout” on Wednesday, July 29 in conjunction with the Louisa County Fair. Sponsored by Louisa Communications the 4 cylinders and Mod Lites were in action with double 20 laps features for both classes.

The second feature was started in reverse of the first feature finish.

Mike Morrill, Altoona took home two trophies winning both features in the Mod Lite division. Winners in the 4 Cylinder features were Geoff Theobald, Wapello and Brad Chandler, Cedar Rapids.

Twenty four cars started the mod lite feature number one with Mike Kennedy and Shane Hunter on the front row. Morrill took the lead on lap 2 of the fifteen lap race leading the field around the 4/10 mile.

A green, white, checkered finish set up a battle to the checkered.
Morrill would hold off Shane Hunter to get his first win of the night.

The second Mod Lite feature started in reverse order of the finish of the first feature with Michael Dominguez and Daniel Vincent on the front row. Dominguez took the lead at the drop of the green leading the field for the next three laps. On lap five, Dominguez and Johnny Mordock bumped sending Dominguez into the wall and Mordock taking over the lead. But his lead would be short as Morrill took the lead on the backstretch going to the outside of Mordock. Morrill would pull away from the field and take the checkered flag by several car lengths getting his second win of the evening. Hunter finished second followed by Mordock and Josh May.

In 4 Cylinder action race fans saw two different winners with Brad Chandler taking the first feature win and Wapello’s Geoff Theobald getting the final feature win of the evening. Chandler took the lead from his front row start followed by Theobald, Nathan Chandler and Darrin Smith. Chandler easily took the win with the battle for second going to Theobald.

Feature number 2 in the 4 cylinder division went to Wapello’s Geoff Theobald. Nick Wilkerson and Tyler Whalen started on the pole in the sixteen car field with Whaley taking the early lead. Theobald would pass Whalen as they came out of turn four on lap four for the lead and then had to work to hold off Chandler. Racing action was stopped on lap ten when Andrew Theobald rolled violently several times in turn four. Theobald escaped uninjured and racing resumed with brother Geoff in the lead. It was bumper to bumper racing for the final six laps between Theobald and Chandler . The two were side by side as the took the checkered flag with Theobald edging out Chandler at the wire by 2-3 feet.
