COLUMBUS JUNCTION, IA (July 31) – After an impending storm stopped the action at CJ Speedway last week race fans got to see double features in three of the five classes at in Columbus Junction Friday, July 31. Capping off the Louisa County Fair, race fans saw five racers get their first features wins at CJ including Cole Simmons, Morning Sun (stock cars), Alex Buffington, Wapello (modifieds), Andrew Theobald, Wapello (4 cylinders), Justin Malone, New London (hobby stocks) and Travis Finke, Columbus Junction (stock cars). Also getting wins were Larry Herring (modifieds), Jason Masengarb (mod lites) and Tyler Whalen (4 cylinders). The IMCA Stock Cars kicked off the night for the first make up feature of the night with Cole Simmons getting his first feature win of the year. Simmons took the lead from the drop of the green in a race that saw several cautions. After the final caution came out it made for a green, white, checkered finish where Simmons had to work to hold off Tad Payne for the win. In the second stock car feature of the night it was Travis Finke of Columbus Junction taking the checkered flag for his first win. Finke took the early lead in the fifteen car field at the start working to stay ahead of Randy Phillips. As Fink pulled away from the field, and Phillips running second a battle for third made for some good racing between Aaron Summy, David Hemsted, Brett Timmerman, Cole Simmons and Shelly Mizell with Summy winning the battle. Tyler Whalen added to his win list topping the fourteen car 4 cylinder make up feature. Whalen took the lead early on only to give it up to Geoff Theobald on lap five. Whalen got his lead back one lap later on lap six. On lap seven of the eight lap race, Theobald suddenly slowed on the back stretch and pulled in as Whalen pulled away from the field to take the checkered flag. Darrin Smith moved up to finish second followed by Cory Sheets. After coming off a violent roll last week, Andrew Theobald returned to win his first 4 Cylinder feature (second feature of the night) at CJ this year. Theobald took the lead on a restart after the only caution of the race came out on lap two. Theobald would pull away from the field while a battle for second would go on behind him between Sheetz and Robert Harding. Theobald went on to take the checkered flag with Sheetz taking second, Harding third and Jordan Tipps fourth. Moving up to the modified division this year, Wapello’s Alex Buffington would get his first modified feature win in the modified July 24th make up feature. Buffington took the lead from the start and would pull away from the field. Todd Hansen, Bruce Hanford and Adam Bell put on a great show for the fans racing for the second spot as Buffington would hold his lead. When the checkered flag came out it was Buffington getting the win followed by Hansen, Hanford and Bell. Modified feature number 2 was an exciting one with bumper to bumper, side by side action and Larry Herring getting the win. Todd Hansen of Muscatine took the early lead heading the field around the 4/10 mile for the next eight circuits. With just three laps to go Bruce Hanford would pull along side Hansen and take the lead on lap eleven. On the final lap Herring would pass Hanford for the lead in exciting finish. Hanford would finish second followed by Dean Mahlstedt and Hansen. New London’s Justin Malone would get his first hobby stock feature win leading from start to finish in the ten lap feature. Matt Tucker would follow to finish second followed by Billy Faler and Rob Wilsey. Racing was stopped when Blaine Dopler took a hard hit to the front stretch wall knocking the axel and wheels off the car. Jason Masengarb, Colona, got his second mod-lite feature win this year after taking the lead on lap seven. Todd Hansen took the first of three leads on lap one only to give it up to Robert Guss on lap four. Guss appeared to develop car problems and slowed giving Hansen the lead back. Hensen led the field for two more laps when on lap seven Masengarb would pass him for the third lead of the race and went on to take the checkered flag for the second time this year. Hansen would follow to finish second with Dawson Schram finishing third.
