Beard, Hansen and Dopler get first wins at CJ Speedway; point
battles are tight
By Dana Royer/CJ Speedway
COLUMBUS JUNCTION (August 14) There were three first time winners at CJ
Speedway in Columbus Junction last Friday, August 14 with Phillip Beard,
Crawfordsville (stock cars), Todd Hansen, Muscatine (mod lites) and Blaine
Dopler, Wapello (hobby stocks) getting their first wins at the 4/10 mile
track. Getting repeat wins were Geoff Theobald, Wapello (4 cylinders) and
Steve Stewart, Burlington (modifieds).
With three point races remaining for the 2009 season the point battles are
tight in all five classes and the IMCA Stock Car class is no exception.
Phillip Beard, Crawfordsville, picked up his first IMCA Stock Car win at CJ
Speedway last Friday topping the eighteen car field. Although Beard got the
win eyes were also on David Hemsted, Lone Tree and Trent Vrchoticky,
Fredonia, who are in a tight race for the point championship. A fourth place
finish by Hemsted and fifth place finish by Vrchoticky kept the battle close
with Hemsted holding a narrow six point lead over Vrchoticky 303 to 297.
Geoff Theobald, Wapello, added to his win list taking the checkered flag in
the 4 cylinder feature for third time this season. But itıs the Whalen
family who is battling for the 4 cylinder point championship with only eight
points separating the top three positions. Bill Whalen leads the point race
with 324 followed by John Whalen with 318 and Tyler Whalen with 316.
Todd Hansen, Muscatine, was another first time winner as Hansen took the
checkered flag for the first time in the mod lite division at CJ Speedway.
The point race for the mod lites is the tightest of the five classes with
just 5 points separating Todd Hansen and Robert Guss 335 to 330.
Blaine Dopler, Wapello, took the checkered flag for his first win at CJ
Speedway in the hobby stock division last Friday. With just three point
races remaining, Lane Kauffman, Muscatine holds a 14 point lead over Jason
Hartman 267 to 253
Steve Stewart, Burlington, chalked up another win getting his third modified
win this season. But Bruce Hanford would hold the leader in the point
standings with
313 over
Adam Bell with 293.
COMING UP THIS FRIDAY at CJ Speedway will be more point race action in all
five classes on Wapello, Oakville, and Grandview Night, Friday, August 21.
Wapello, Oakville and Grandview residents can get special $5.00 admission
with proof of residency. The point races are winding down and the battles
are tight so come out and cheer on your hometown favorites.
