COLUMBUS JUNCTION, IA (9/4/09) Season Championship Night at CJ Speedway in Columbus Junction, Friday, Sept. 4, saw three of the five classes seeing racers getting feature wins as well as point championships. David Hemsted (IMCA Stock Cars), Lone Tree, Rob Guss (mod lites), Moline, Il., and Lane Kauffman, (hobby stocks), Muscatine got feature wins in their divisions as well as being named track champions for 2009. Also getting wins were Adam Bell, Kalona, winning the modified feature and Geoff Theobald, Wapello, getting his fourth 4 cylinder win. But in these two divisions the points championships went to Bruce Hanford, Davenport for the modifieds and John Whalen, Ainsworth, for the 4 cylinders. In two of the five classes the points battle went down to the wire and the 4 cylinders was one of the classes. Bill Whalen held a one point advantage over brother John when racing began. Features were lined up according to points with the two brothers on the front row. John Whalen took the early lead followed by nephew Tyler Whalen and Bill. Bills chances at the points championship was dampened when Wapelloıs Geoff Theobald got together with the point leader sending Whalen, who was running third, spinning to bring out the caution. Both drivers were sent to the rear and racing resumed. With John Whalen in the lead on lap eight of the twelve lap race, Theobald had raced back up to the front of the pack and was able to pass John Whalen for the lead with two laps to go and went on to take the checkered flag. Johnıs second place finish clinched the points championship for the 4 cylinders by just four points over Bill Whalen 397 to 393. Tyler Whalen followed with 390 points to finish third in the standings. Another close point battle was in the Mod Lite division where Rob Guss, Moline, Il. edged out Todd Hansen, Muscatine, for the points championship 409 to 407. Guss took the early lead from his front row start and led the field for twelve laps enroute to his first Mod Lite feature win at CJ Speedway. With Guss out in front the battle for second was going on between Hansen and Troy Phillpott. Guss would get the win and the points championship while Hansen had to settle for second in both the feature and points battle. In Hobby Stock action Lane Kauffman, Muscatine, got his first hobby stock feature win and claimed the points championship for that division with a twenty two point advantage over Jason Hartman, Muscatine. Kauffman took the lead from his front row start in the twelve car field and never looked back taking the win by several car lengths. Blaine Dopler battled Billy Faler for second but couldnıt get by the Columbus Junction driver as Faler took second. Daveports Bruce Hanford took the point championship in the modified division but had to settle for second in the feature race to Adam Bell of Kalona. Bell took the early lead in the twenty lap race with Hanford following. Hanford couldnıt seem to catch the 23B of Bell early on but as the race neared completion Hanford appeared to be gaining on the leader. As they passed the grandstands, with Bell in the lead, Hanford had closed in but wouldnıt be able to take the lead as Bell took the checkered flag by two car lengths. Hanford was named the modified track point champion leading Bell 388 to 371. In the final point race of the 2009 season at CJ Speedway, David Hemsted, Lone Tree took the checkered flag and the points championship in the seventeen car field. Hemsted led from start to finish in the fifteen lap race as Wapelloıs Darin Ealey finished second. Hemstedıs win clinched the title as he led the points 377 to Trent Vrchotickyıs 365.
