COLUMBUS JUNCTION, IA (August 6, 2010) Point race
action continued at Columbus Junction’s CJ Speedway with four drivers
getting repeat wins and one driver getting his first win of the 2010 season.
Taking the checkered flag in feature events were Lane Kauffman, Muscatine
(hobby stocks), Troy Philpott, Muscatine (mod lites), Geoff Theobald,
Wapello (4 cylinders), Kirk Kinsley, Wapello (stock cars), and Steve
Stewart, Burlington (modifieds). The Iron Man Challenge $200 bonus went
unclaimed when no racer was able to win features on Thursday, July 29 and
Friday, Aug. 6. The challenge was issued to any driver who could win feature
races in the stock car, mod lite or 4 cylinder divisions during the Corn
Belt Clash (July 29) and the Louisa County Fair race (July 30) which was
rained out and rescheduled for Aug. 6.
Wapello’s Kirk Kinsley took the checkered flag
for the first time this season at CJ Speedway last Friday in the Mincer Ford
#21m. Kinsley took the lead from his frontm row start and by mid race would
begin to pull away in the fourteen car field. With Kinsley out in front a
battle for second was going on behind him between Billy Faler, Tad Payne,
and David Hemsted racing bumper to bumper. Payne would get by Faler with
five laps to go to finish second behind Kinsley who took the win.
Lane Kauffman, Columbus City raced to his third
hobby stock feature win Friday, Aug. 6. Kaufman took the early lead from his
front row start and had to work to hold off Wapello’s Alex Buffington early
on as the two pulled away from the field. On lap five Buffington and Jason
Hartman got together with Hartman spinning and both went to the rear of the
field. Kauffman went on to take the checkered flag by several car lengths as
Buffington worked his way back to a second place finish.
Troy Philpott took advantage of his front row
start to get his second Mod Lite feature win this year. Philpott had to work
to hold off Paul Hallet till Hallet spun in turn 3 with a flat bringing out
the caution on lap eight of the twelve lap feature. With Philpott in the
lead, Greg Rossell had moved into the second spot when a caution came out
with two laps to go. The green, white, checkered finish set up a close
finish but Philpott would hold on to win by several car lengths.
Wapello’s Geoff Theobald raced to his fifth 4
cylinder feature win this year at CJ Speedway. Theobald and Morning Sun’s
Wayne Noble would pull away from the field but the #33 was again the one to
beat as he went on to take the checkered flag.
Burlington’s Steve Stewart took the lead from
Todd Hansen, Muscatine on lap two of the fifteen lap modified feature for
his third win this season. Following two yellows on lap four, Brandon Banks,
Washington was able to move into the second spot as the two leaders pulled
away. Stewart would not relinquish his lead to Banks and would take the
checkered flag by several car lengths over Banks and Daniel Brockert,
Grandview who moved into third.
