DeFrance
with "Dirt at the Downs" Deery win
CEDAR RAPIDS
(August 07) — Johnny Spaw, an eight-time late model track
champion at
Hawkeye Downs from Cedar Rapids, whipped to the outside and shot past
front-running Darrel DeFrance as the two exited turn 3 on lap 6, and sped to
an apparent win in the IMCA
Deery Brothers Summer Series main event for dirt-track late models last
night in front of an estimated 2,000 fans.
Thirty IMCA Late Models registered at the Hawkeye Downs tech barn and after
heat races, a 10-lap qualifier and two provisional spots were awarded, 24 of
the powerful late models started the feature, which went 35 laps
green-to-checkers.
DeFrance, of Marshalltown, made his unprecedented 328th consecutive Deery
Brothers Summer Series start and held on for second, followed by Matt Ryan
of Davenport, Terry Neal of Ely and Jeff Aikey of Waterloo.
However, Spaw’s engine was found illegal in post-race inspection and
DeFrance is now credited with the feature win, his second in a row in the
series, as he won the July 31 event at
Algona Raceway.
There was also racing for the IMCA Modifieds and all four Hawkeye Downs
quarter-mile classes last night.
There were six IMCA Modifieds at the track, including one driven by former
Hawkeye Downs late model track champion Max Corporon who has been racing a
dirt-track modifieds in recent years. He started on the pole in last night's
special and feature and led all 12 green flag laps. He also raced here last
Friday.
"We worked on the car a little bit more and the starting spot didn't hurt
either.
Brian Franks stuck his nose across the finish line just ahead of points
leader Kurt Bohnsack and Bob Ahrendsen — winner of the last two features —
to win the 25-lap IMCA
Sunoco Stock Car feature. Franks started inside the second row but led
after one lap on his way to his second victory of the season.
Scott Kositzky started on the pole and led all 20 green-flag laps to win the
Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMod feature, his second win this season.
Ryan Luedtke finished second and was able to build on his points lead over
Arnie Rief, who was sixth last night.
Gary Pfantz continued his torrid summer by winning his eighth IMCA Sunoco
Hobby Stocks feature in 10 starts. Pfantz started the 20-lap feature outside
the third row and zipped to the lead on lap 6.
