DAVENPORT, Ia. (April 17, 2009) – Mark Burgtorf of Quincy, IIl., captured the Deery Brothers Summer Series late model feature, Friday night at the Davenport Speedway. Burgtorf and sixty other IMCA Late Model drivers were on hand Friday, to battle for the $2,000 top prize. Six heat races and three semi-features boiled the class down to the 24-car starting field. Terry Neal of Ely, Ia., started the race on the pole and took the early lead. After a couple of early race cautions, Neal built a sizeable lead. Near the midway point of the 40-lapper, lapped traffic came into play. Several lapped cars caused Neal to change his line on the racetrack, allowing Burgtorf and Jeff Aikey of Waterloo, to close in on the leader. On lap 24, Neal attempted to go on the high side around a couple of back markers, while Burgtorf dove to the bottom. Burgtorf came away with the lead and would drive away to the victory. Neal finished second, ahead of Aikey, Tom Darbyshire, and Jason Frankel. Heat race wins went to Dan Shelliam, Frankel, Burgtorf, Ray Guss Jr., Neal, and Darbyshire. Semi-feature wins were taken by Tommy Elston, Matt Ryan, and Adam Oppendike In Pro Mod action, ‘the Dominator’, Bob Dominacki returned to victory lane. The Bettendorf racer jumped out to an early lead in the 20-lap main, but by lap 10, he was being hounded by John Bull. Bull got to Dominacki’s bumper several times, but faded late and had to settle for second. Thad Wilson came from the fifth row to finish third, with Milo Veloz and Matt Stein rounding out the top five. Joe Beal came back from an early race caution to score a win in the Street Stock feature. The ‘Real Deal’ Beal passed Jeremy Marquette late in the race, to take the win. Marquette finished second with Andrew Burk third, Tim Koehler fourth, and Donnie Louck fifth. Marion’s Max Corporon made the trip to Davenport pay off, as he won the IMCA Modified feature. Corporon passed Chris Stein to take the lead and drove on to the win. Stein took second, ahead of Mark Massey, Rick Schriner and Mike Fluegel, in that order. Jeremy Campbell of Dubuque, posted the win in the 4 Stock class. Campbell got into the lead early and went on to an easy victory. Ricky Kay took second with Josh Riley third. Next Friday, April 24, is the 2009 Season Opener sponsored by Koehler Electric. All six classes (IMCA Late Model, Pro Mod, Street Stock, IMCA Modified, INEX Legend, and 4 Stocks) will be competing for points towards a track championship.
