CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (July 31) – The annual adventure on asphalt is next for the Deery Brothers Summer Series, when IMCA Late Models visit Hawkeye Downs Speedway on Aug. 5. Sanctioned Stock Cars, Hobby Stocks and Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMods, along with the local hornet class, complete the Wednesday night card at Cedar Rapids. The grandstand opens at 6 p.m. and racing starts at 7:05 p.m. Five-time tour champion Jeff Aikey of Waterloo won for the 50th time in his Deery career in July and will come to town with a 36-point advantage over Jason Frankel of Quincy, Ill., in the latest standings. Aikey and Mike Smith of Jewell have each won three of the 16 previous Deery events held at Hawkeye Downs. NASCAR’s Ken Schrader has visited Cedar Rapids to take a pair of checkers. Among the drivers with one pavement victory apiece are Ray Guss Jr. of Milan, Ill., who has won the last two series races on dirt, hometown pilot Johnny Spaw and, last August, Darrel DeFrance of Marshalltown. DeFrance has yet to miss a race in the series’ 22-plus seasons. That streak now stands at 345 consecutive events. Grandstand admission next Wednesday will be $15 for adults, $8 for seniors and students (ages 12-17) and $1 for kids 11 and under who attend with a paid adult. From Cedar Rapids, the series returns to dirt at the Iowa State Fairgrounds Speedway in Des Moines on Tuesday, Aug. 18 and at Marshalltown Speedway on Wednesday, Aug. 19.
