Aikey dominates “Dirt At the Downs” Deery
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (Aug. 5) – CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (Aug. 5) – Jeff Aikey
proved again that he’s just as fast on asphalt as he is on dirt.
Aikey led the last 31 times around the half-mile oval in winning Wednesday’s
“Dirt At The Downs” Deery Brothers Summer Series feature at Hawkeye Downs
Speedway.
The victory, his third of the season, career fourth at Cedar Rapids and IMCA
Late Model tour 51st, paid $2,000.
Jason Frankel, second behind Aikey in the series point standings, ran in the
runner-up spot most of the way. Terry Neal, Ray Guss Jr. and Rob Toland
rounded out the top five.
Neal, piloting Rick Dralle’s car after his own ride expired early in the
evening, drew the pole start but Aikey made his move from outside row two
and was at the front of the field when the fourth lap was scored.
He was pulling away before catching up with the back of the pack on the 11th
circuit. Frankel made up most of the distance as the two ran in lapped
traffic, trying unsuccessfully high and low to make his way into first.
The front pair continued to negotiate their way through backrunners as the
race ran caution-free. Johnny Spaw passed nine cars and finished sixth.
Barron Motor Supply IMCA Stock Cars, Barron Motor Supply IMCA Hobby Stocks,
IMCA Northern SportMods, and Sunline Hornets were also is action on the
quarter-mile asphalt in the special Wednesday night event presented by Clear
Channel Radio.
Greg Hentrich bolted into the lead at the drop of the green flag in the
25-lap Barron Motor Supply IMCA Stock Car Feature and wasn’t challenged the
rest of the way as he scored his first Stock Car win at Hawkeye Downs.
Hentrich was chased to the flagstand by Brian Beaty, Cory Houdek, David
Ballstaedt, and Chad Siems.
Point leader Kurt Bohnsack finished sixth.
In other Papa Johs/I-Wireless Championship Series action, Jeff Franks scored
his fourth straight feature win after securing the point on lap three. Gary
Pfantz chased Franks for much of the 20-lap feature but could draw no closer
than a car length or so in the final laps.
Pfantz maintained his hold on second while point leader Scott Siems finished
third. Shaun Myers finished fourth and Nathan Ballard was fifth.
Aric Becker proved unstoppable in the IMCA SportMods as he easily
out-distanced the field in collecting his first win of 2009. Becker started
on the outside of row one, took command at the drop of the green and was
never challenged the rest of the way. Action was halted brefly for a caution
with five laps remaining as point leader Scott Kositzky tangled with Dave
Coghlan. Blake Carson finished second while Ken Kositzky, Creston Willaims
and Jonny Williams filled out the top of the order.
Another large swarm of Sunline Hornets was on hand and three and four-wide
racing was again the norm, rather than the exception. Brogan Fiala scored
his second trip of the season to Coca-Cola Victory Lane after starting in
row two. Brian Franks, a newcomer to the Hornets field came through the pack
from 18th to finish in second. Derek Parrott was third, Brad Chandler
fourth, and Jim Hanson , fifth.
Point leader Shane Hanson was 8th.
