Smith, Cox, Curtis, Hull, Murray and the Bonnetts Win at the
Iowa State Fair Speedway
By David Wilkinson
DES MOINES, Ia (May 26, 2006) - It was a great start to the Memorial Day weekend on Friday and a beautiful night for racing. Mike Smith won the IMCA late model main, Greg Cox the IMCA modified feature, Steve Curtis the IMCA stock car main, Josh Hull the Cookies BBQ Truck Series race, Jacob Murray the IMCA SportMod main and IMCA hobby stock features were won by Bill Bonnett and Rex Bonnett.
Mike Smith led all 18 laps of the IMCA late model feature, but it was not an easy win. Halfway through the race Darrell DeFrance, who started ninth, moved into second place. On the restart he made a big move and passed Todd Cooney and started to chase Smith. Smith was able hold off DeFrance as Smith took the high line and DeFrance the low line. On lap 16, Cooney moved past DeFrance for second and on the last lap DeFrance passed Cooney for second. The finishing order was Smith, DeFrance, Cooney and Robert See. After the race Cooney was fined $100 for leaving the infield with someone riding on his car, a practice that drivers had been warned to stop at the driver’s meeting.
Jimmy Gustin used his pole stating spot in the IMCA modified feature as he jumped into the lead ahead of Bill Davis Jr. Later in the race, Todd Inman running second and Greg Cox racing third, started to close on Gustin. On lap 11 of the 15-lap race, Inman ran high exiting turn four, Cox moved by and set his eyes on Gustin On lap 13, Cox pulled along Gustin in turns two and four and passed him for the lead on the next lap. The finishing order at the checkered was Cox, Gustin, Inman and d Todd Shute.
The IMCA stock car main was another nail biter at the end. The race started with Gary Bass leading Don Wear and Randy Killen. Midway through the race, Killen charged hard and was briefly ahead on the backstretch, but not at the start/finish line. On lap eleven, the race for the lead stretched three wide across the track with Bass, Killen and Gary Curtis. By the end of that lap, Curtis was in front and he stayed there to the end of the race. Killen ran second, Bass third, and Jeff Johnson fourth.
The Bonnett family dominated the two IMCA hobby stock mains. In the first main, Bill Bonnett passed Jeff Hovick on the second lap and led all the way to the finish. Mark Fee finished second, Mike Johnston third and Rob Allison fourth. In the second hobby feature brother Rex Bonnett led all ten laps to claim the win with nephew Adam Bonnett ending the race in third. John Yaw Sr. was second and Greg Clark fourth.
Josh Hull led all 12 laps of the Cookies BBQ Truck Series feature. He started on the pole and looked the easy winner until the last few laps when Rick Clark reduced the real estate between the two. The finish was Hull, Clark, Matt Waugh and Brian Murray.
In the best IMCA SportMod feature of the year, Jacob Murray emerged the winner. Gene Behle had the early lead and midway through the race, six cars were bunched in the front – Behle, Kyle Wahlert, Ryan Lundy, Bugs Vincent, Murray, and Mike Whaley. After a couple of laps, Murray burst through to the front and was the first to take the checkered. Wahlert finished second, Lundy third, and Vincent fourth.
Racing continues next Friday evening featuring IMCA late models, modifieds, hobby stocks, SportMods, and Cookies BBQ Truck Series. Hot laps are scheduled for 6:00 PM with racing following. On June 9, the Pork Expo occupies the fairgrounds and there will be no racing that night.
