WAPELLO COUNTY FAIR CHECKERS GOTO UNDERWOOD, LYNCH, HUSTEAD,
MCDANIEL AND GUSTIN

ELDON, IA (June 19) - With the flood waters from the Des Moines river trying
to force a cancellation the fairboard decided to hold the 2008 Wapello
County Fair with racing action on Thursday night a field of fifty-five cars
check into the pit area for competition.
The first feature of the night was the b-modifieds with Cory Brown and
Paul Underwood battling for the lead but Brown’s night would end with a
crash in turn one with Underwood taking the lead and never looking back
andMike Shelton trying several times to take the lead but settled for a
runner-up spot with Eldon racer Brandon Martin in third and Mike Grooms of
Bloomfield in fourth.
The Mid-America 305 Winged Sprint Car feature went to Louis Lynch of
Glenwood, Mo. taking the race lead from the pole position and leading all
fourteen laps for his second straight win at the super half-mile. The action
would stop twice for Brian Hetrick of Strong Hurst, IL. Making contact with
the turn three wall and Tasker Phillips getting upside down in turn one
bringing out the red. The battle for the second spot between Mike Mayberry
of Fremont and Bob Lamb of Mitchellville going wheel-to-wheel with Lamb
making the pass with four laps remaining with Mayberry taking third and New
London driver Scott Boles in fourth.
The mini-stock feature saw several cars getting upside down and making big
splashes in turn three and four and down the backstretch but after all the
excitement Andrew Hustead of Colony, MO. showed his brother who was the
better of the two taking his second fair race of 2008 taking the Scotland
County Fair checkers on Tuesday and scoring the win at the Wapello County
Fair. Ethan Hustead took the second spot with Derek Randall of Washington in
third and Ottumwa driver Jim Garrett in fourth.
In the USRA hobby stock feature Andy Coleman of Packwood paced the field the
first eight laps before Jason McDaniel of Eldon would go door-to-door with
Coleman with McDaniel making the pass for the lead in turn one and score the
win with Coleman in a close second and Ottumwa driver Bob Lynch taking third
and Don Nunnikhoven of Kellogg taking the fourth spot.
The final feature of the night was the high powered A-modifieds with Richie
Gustin of Gilman drawing the pole starting spot but after leading the first
seven laps a lap car and Gustin would make contact in turn four giving
Gustin a flat right front tire and the youg racer wrestled the wheel for the
final eight laps and holding off several runs by Oskaloosa driver Ron
Verbeek who took the second spot with Brandon Banks in third and Mark Widmar
of Ottumwa in fourth.
