KNOXVILLE, IA (May 26) - Sunshine gave way to clouds, but English Creek
Speedway avoided the ominous Memorial Day Weekend forcast.
Several inches of rain were predicted to fall Thursday and on through the
weekend, but Friday in Marion County, Iowa was far from rainy. Yet another solid
crowd was on hand to witness a thrilling night of racing, as 43 competitors
signed-in at the back gate. The start of 125cc heat race #2 saw James Ambers get
over a wheel and make several flips down the front straight before coming to a
stop at the entrance to turn #1. He would walk away just fine, and even tried to
start the feature but his kart would not fire.
Micro Sprint Feature Winner Austin McCarl
Young Kelby Watt, just 6 years old, from Adel, stole the spotlight away from
Rookie Brooke Mitrisin in the Restictor-Box Stock Feature as Mitirisin was going
for her 2nd win in just her 3 night behind the wheel. Watt ran down Mitirisin
and made the pass with 2 laps to go to pick up the win. Ryan Leavitt of
Knoxville held off another late charge by Jake Sharp to take his first win in
the Box Stock division. Leavitt started last but moved up on the opening start,
as Jacob Accord got over the wheel of Collin Moyle and got upside down when the
yellow flew for the intial start being called back. Accord continued the race
with a slightly bent top wing and finished 5th. At the start of the 125cc
Feature there was plenty of contact, which saw the hood of Laney Feight's 8L
completely torn off. The kart did not sustain much damage and he was able to
return, though several other drivers pulled in the infield before a complete
restart. But for the third week in-a-row there was a new winner in the class as
a Wisconsin traveler, Blake Anderson, put his 12x machine in victory lane.
Although it wasn't Carson, it was another McCarl in victory lane for the 3rd
consecutive week. Austin used his pole starting position to pick up his first
Micro Sprint win at English Creek. Austin McCarl was almost perfect on the
evening, setting fast time, winning the dash and the Feature; only a second
place in his heat race prevented the sweep. Carson, winner of the previous two
weeks, finished in 7th.
The Open/500cc division saw several twists and turns during the Feature. Cody
Ambers jumped out to the lead from the front row and led the first half of the
race. That first half also saw Jamie Ball climb up to 3rd from deep in the
field. Cody Ambers would spin on a restart giving Michael Williams the lead,
with Alan Ambers right behind. Jamie Ball would struggle on the restart, falling
several positions then stopping in turn 2. From there he would go from the back
of the 12-car field and blast all the way back up to finish 2nd. Alan Ambers
held off a couple late race attempts from Ball to pick up the win.
The next race at English Creek Speedway will be next Saturday afternoon, June 2.
Gates open at 10:00am with Hot Laps slated for Noon.
