Racing at Shelby County Speedway
By Shannon Lowe

HARLAN, IA (May 18) - Cool weather at the Shelby County Speedway had fans turning out for racing wearing coats hats and some blankets but filling the stands despite the cold.  It was BINGO night at the Speedway and fans enjoyed following the BINGO numbers as well as their favorite car numbers as the nights racing got underway.

An early battle between Daniel Mefford and James  Smith in the Shelby County Speedway Sport Compacts feature race promised heated racing on cool night in Harlan.  Caine Mahlberg jumps up  a couple spots to challenge as trouble with Smiths ride causes him to lose ground, but he wasn’t the only car struggling, Taylor Griffen found himself way off the pace and struggling to get in as many laps as he could before finishing his night.  Caine Mahlberg takes the lead as Dustin Poldberg moves into position to challenge with Gary Ashcraft moving in behind him.  Poldberg takes the lead and leaves the race behind him as he chases down the checkered flag leaving Ashcraft to battle Mahlberg for second.  Poldberg wins his second feature races at Shelby County Speedway this year making it look as if he is planning on making the trip to The O’Reilly Victory Lane a habit this year.  Ashcraft finishes in the second spot with Caine Mahlberg in third, Tom Summerfield and Daniel Mefford finishing out the top five.

WAM Performance Parts Hobby Stocks took the track with enthusiasm as powerhouse racers buried in the middle of the pack worked though traffic to find their way to the front.  Despite using fender flair to rub their way through traffic, hobby stock drivers maintained control over their vehicle and raced from green to checkered with no cautions.  Shannon Andersen powered his way through traffic with both Madden brothers following him through traffic.  Anderson finds the lead and leaves Chuck and Corey Madden to battle for second.  Chuck Madden takes the second spot while Corey Madden finished third with Kurt Hansen and Kenney Hansen rounding out the top five.

Twenty-two IMCA Sport Mods made the haul to Harlan for chance at the KNOD Sport Mod Trophy making the class the largest at the Shelby County Speedway.  With competitive drivers and a couple of Sport Mod rookies the class is sure to bring excitement to the dirt every Saturday night.  Mike Brown sporting a new paint job jumps from the point to the early lead. As racers from the back of the pack work for a top five spot, Dan McKeighan and Dennis Cook battling for the five spot as Brown looses the lead to Chad Dills.  Three wide racing and the shuffle is on with McKeighan landing in second Dills out front, Joe Mefford losing out to Jared Hansen and Mike Brown.  Luke Wanniger made his move from the back of the pack, using the whole track to weave through traffic, and takes the lead.  Dan McKeighan finishes second behind him with Jesse Sobbing, Chad Dills and Tanner Powers also in the top five.

Bill Osbahr held the early lead in the Pizza Ranch Stock Car class, but there was no stopping Jeremy Gettler who powered around him and moved out to an impressive lead to looking to remain uncatchable by the pack.  Keith Knop moved through traffic and managed to get past Osbahr for the second spot giving him a clear track to chase down Gettler.  Knop whittles the distance in half before a caution on the speedway brings him right up to Gettler’s rear bumper for the restart.  Knop pushed to take the lead as the white flag signaling one lap to go and Gettler stays low on the track trying to hold him off.  With both drivers pushing and neither giving ground, the fenders gave under the pressure connecting the vehicles.  They come to a halt just inside turn one and crews worked under the yellow flag to untangle the leaders.  Both were able to continue but were sent to the back of the pack handing the lead over to Dustin Smith.  With only two to go, the race was on and Tim Bengard chased Smith looking for a opening to dive past him, but ran out of time as the checkered fell with Smith the winner, Bengard in second, Osbahr in third and Clay Christian and Dave Plowman rounding out the top five.

Josh Most made a run for the money in the Budweiser Late Models, with the early lead.  Determined to stay out front, he stretched his lead to the point where catching looked improbable.  But points leader Barry Sorensen was not to be easily outdone as he maneuvered through traffic and found his groove in the second spot with a wide open track between them.  With thirteen laps to go, Most began working into lap traffic with Sorensen chewing up the distance between them with each lap. Some rubbing between the leaders and lap traffic, slowed both Sorensen and Most, but experience in working through traffic gave Sorensen the edge, and with a good bite on the track finally moved passed him into the top spot.  The lap traffic chaos had some fans relying on the scoreboard to tell them who was in third, but the girls in the score tower had no trouble keeping the order.  Vance Tonak takes away third, Kyle Wahlert and Don Smith, Jr in fourth and fifth.

Back in Black, Red Monson takes the early lead in the Pitts Chiropractic Modifieds as seventeen year old Nick Deal works his way through traffic to land in the number two spot ready to challenge Monson.  Jeff Stephens right behind him working the high side to land in third.  Monson’s dynamic lead began to disappear as Deal found a line on the track that gave him good bite and build momentum with every lap.  Monson was determined to block Deal and not let him by, but Deal found an opening on the low side and made his move.  Both drivers fought for the top spot and the resulting banging left heavy damage on both cars.  Monson takes back the lead but is unable to hold it as trouble with his car brings out a caution.  Deal takes it into the pit area to try to repair the damage and continues the race from the back of the pack.  That gives the lead to Jeff Stephens who keeps out in front of the pack to take the trophy with Greg Cox, Mike Albertsen, Craig Reetz and Jeff Jones also in the top five.
