by: Brad Grupe
CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (May 31, 2006) - Open Wheel racing fans are in for a treat this
weekend as the USAC Ford Focus Midgets make the first of two appearances at
Hawkeye Downs this Friday night..
Joining the Midgets will be the Performance Concepts Late Models, Miller Time
Modifieds, and Budweiser Sportsmen on the half-mile with the Barron Motor Supply
Hobby Stocks slated for action on the quarter-mile.
The Midwest Division of Pavement Ford Focus Midgets has only run one complete
event so far this season with reigning champion Tate Martz winning that event at
Columbus Motor Speedway. Their second event of the season at Anderson Speedway
was halted by rain.
The Ford Focus Midgets will run heats and a feature.
The point races remain close in most of the divisions at Hawkeye Downs as
drivers continue to battle for the Papa Johns Cup I-Wireless Championships.
In Performance Concepts Late Models, Kyle Hinrichs holds a one point lead over
Scott Wennermark. Jeff King is only eight points behind the leader. There have
been four different winners in the four features run so far this season.
The Miller Time Modifieds point leader, Tim Plummer, has a bit of a cushion over
co-second place holders Rodney Rocarek and Arlo Becker. Rocarek and Beceker
trail Plummer by 13 points. The Modified division has seen four different
winners this season as well.
Andy Duggan has forged out a six-point lead in the Budweiser Sportsmen division
despite not yet winning a feature. Dave McCalla and Martin Ballard sit tied for
second. There have been three different winners in the Sportsmen division with
Ross Zumbach the only driver to win more than one event.
The Barron Motor Suppply Hobby Stocks, which are part of the Full Throttle
Energy Drink Stars of Tomorrow, show Tim Dains with a three point cushion over
Terry Shaffar and Rodney Grother. Dains holds two feature wins this season.
Grandstand Gates open at 6pm with Racing kicking off at 7pm.
