ROBERTSON REPEATS IN USAC FORD FOCUS MIDGETS AT HAWKEYE DOWNS
SIEMS, PLUMMER, WENNERMARK, McCALLA POST WINS
by: Brad Grupe
CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (Aug. 04, 2006) - The USAC Ford Focus Midgets made their second
appearance of the season at Hawkeye Downs on Friday night and while they were
light in numbers the 30-lap feature was still exciting. Current point leader
Tate Martz of Indianapolis, IN erased a huge lead held by eventual race winner
James Robertson, also of Indianapolis, to make the last few laps worth the price
of admission.
Robertson was able to hold off Martz at the stripe and take his second straight
win at Hawkeye Downs. Tony Main was third, Chett Gehrke fourth, and Robbie Ray
was fifth.
The local Agents of West Bend Mutual Insurance presented Friday’s program which
also included racing in the Budweiser Sportsmen, Miller Time Modifieds,
Performance Concepts Late Models, and Barron Motor Supply IMCA Stock Cars.
In Papa Johns Cup/I Wireless Championship action, Chad Siems picked up his
fourth win of the 2006 campaign, leading a nose to tail freight train involving
the first four finishers. Siems finished ahead of Logan Hale, Bob Ahrendsen and
point leader Brad Dvorak. Randy Filling was fifth.
Defending Miller Time Modified Champion and current point leader Tim Plummer had
a relatively easy run to the checkers in the thirty lap feature for that
division. Plummer started in the fourth row but wasted little time in moving to
the front as he took control of the race on lap 3. Arlo Becker, who trails
Plummer in the points, finished nearly four-and-a-half seconds back in second
with Larry Clausen, Chad Willet, and Rodney Rocarek completing the top of the
order.
Scott Wennermark collected his fourth winner’s trophy of the season in the
Performance Concepts Late Models. Wennermark started second and quickly took the
lead finishing nearly a second ahead of Brad Osborn. Jeff King was third. Rodney
Rocarek finished fourth as he did double duty in a car normally driven by Craig
Roberts. Derrick Nadler, a visiting driver from Grain Valley, MO., finished in
fifth.
Dave McCalla posted an impressive win in the Budweiser Sportsmen feature.
McCalla started in eighth and used the high groove to take the lead on the
eighth trip around the Hawkeye Downs half-mile. Finishing second in the
caution-free race was Andy Duggan. Brian Franks crossed the Coors Light Finish
Line in third, followed by Martin Ballard, and Joey King.
