CASSILL, HAWKEYE DOWNS DRIVERS ENTERTAIN OVERFLOW CROWD MYERS, GROTHER, GIBSON POST FIRST WINS by: Brad Grupe-Hawkeye Downs Speedway CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (August 15) — Several thousand race fans jammed Hawkeye Downs Speedway to the rafters Friday night for Casey’s General Stores Night and the ‘Walk a Lap with Landon” promotion designed to raise money for local flood relief. NASCAR Nationwide series rookie and Cedar Rapids native Landon Casill returned “home” to Hawkeye Downs Speedway to race and to raise cash for The Salvation Army and Aid to Women as they continue to assist local flood victims. An exact total of the money raised isn’t known yet but initial reports early in the evening were that nearly $8000 had been donated by fans at the race. The money raised was to be matched up to $10,000 each by Cassill, Hendrick Motorsports, Dale Earnhart, Jr., and Kyle Busch. Steve Carlson and the other four fastest qualifiers in Late Models, including Landon Cassill, all opted to take a challenge from the fans and start at the back of the feature event in hopes of winning bonus purse money. The rest of the Late Model field was inverted based on qualifying. It took a couple tries to get the 40-lap Miller Lite Late Models feature rolling but once it did the fast cars at the back of the field quickly moved to the front. By the ninth trip around the Hawkeye Downs half-mile Steve Carlson and Landon Cassill were running first and second with Carlson pulling away a bit with each passing lap. However, that lead was erased with six laps remaining setting up a sprint to the finish. As the green flew Cassill broke loose as he hit the throttle spinning on the front stretch. That put Curt VanDerWal in the challenger position but Carlson was able to pull out a 1.3 second win, his sixth of the season.. VanDerWal was second while Johnny Spaw was third, Dudley Fleck fourth, and Griffin McGrath held off Cassill for fifth. Randy Coghlan notched his second trip of the season to Victory Lane in Budweiser Sportsmen. Coghlan pulled out to a huge lead after starting on the point , Michael Weber started running him down but Weber ran out laps after shaving a nearly five second lead down to just .190 seconds at the finish line. Point leader Dave McCalla crossed the line in third followed by Kevin Lee, and Bob Ahrendsen. Larry Clausen was awarded the win in the Coors Light Modified feature after the #88 of apparent race winner Arlo Becker didn’t pass post-race tech inspection. Clausen had battled Becker over the last couple laps but couldn’t make an outside pass stick as they charged to the checkers. Tony Olson finished second in the revised order followed by Mike Schulte, Tim Plummer, and Cory Houdek. Rodney Grother picked up his first win since moving to the Barron Motor Supply IMCA Stock Car division as he beat out Bob Ahrendsen, Dave Ballstaedt, Kurt Bohnsack, and Brian Franks. Grother moved to Stock Cars from the Barron Motor Supply IMCA Hobby Stocks and has shown steady improvement over the course of the season. Shawn Myers started up from and stayed well ahead of the pack in the Barron Motor Supply IMCA Hobby Stock feature to collect his first win in the division since moving up from the Sunline Hornet division. Gary Pfantz, who leads the division, finished second after wrestling the position from Ed O’Brien in the last five laps. O’Brien maintained third while Dennis Klinsky and Roland Bohnsack rounded out the top five. In the Sunline Hornets, Brad Chandler scored his sixth victory of the season. Jim Hanson posted a second place finish which will put him at the top of the points chart after point leader Derek Parrott finished seventh. Shane was third while Nathan Chandler finished fourth and Jonny Williams fifth. Finally, in IMCA Sportmods, Brian Gibson piloted the D56 to the win, his first of the season in just two starts. Gibson has not been in competition at Hawkeye Downs for several years but has driven in several classes, including Late Models previously. Arnie Reif collected second and Aric Becker was third. Current point leader Ryan Luedtke finished fourth and Scott Kositky was fifth. AUGUST 15 FEATURE WINNERS MILLER LITE LATE MODELS 1. Steve Carlson, West Salem, WI; 2.
