CARLSON CAPTURES HIS SIXTH KEITH FLECK MILLER 100 AT HAWKEYE
DOWNS
By: Kevin Ramsell
CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (July 3) - Steve Carlson captured his sixth, third in a
row, Keith Fleck Miller 100 at Hawkeye Downs Speedway in Cedar Rapids, IA.
It is also his third American Speed Association Kwik Trip Midwest Tour
presented by ECHO Outdoor Power Equipment series win of the season holding
off a star studed field of Midwest drivers including the current NASCAR
Camping World Truck Series points leader.
A great crowd was on hand as ASAMT officials hurried to get the event in
with rain inching closer and closer to the Cedar Rapids area. The crowd
witnessed history being made with Carlson holding off Mark Kraus for the
win. “This is really cool, Keith Fleck and his sons are really good friends
of mine and I know them all. Its really neat to win this as many times,” a
happy Carlson stated in victory lane. “I had a lot of fun tonight, the car
handled perfect.”
Carlson started 11th in the main event and quickly worked his way to the
front. How quick? He was up to fifth by lap 12. On lap 15, he worked the
inside line to get past Jonathan Eilen for fourth. He moved up to third on
lap 24 as he passed Blake Brown for the position. Two laps later, he worked
his way past Joey Gase for second.
Kraus, who took over the lead from polesitter Jacob Goede on lap 5, knew
that Carlson was coming. On lap 29, Carlson made his move to the inside
coming off of turn four. The two battled side-by-side until Carlson was able
to pull away going into turn three. Carlson would take over the top spot on
lap 30.
“It was a good run, I knew I had nothing for him,” Kraus said after the
race. He was please with his second consecutive second place run, “It’s
great, it feels great! When you race against the toughest in the country and
you get the local guys, who are also tough you can’t complain.”
Nathan Haseleu added another top-five run by finishing third, “The car was
pretty good, I was trying to save and save, worried that the car was going
to get loose and it actually got tight on us at the end, which kind of
amazed me,” Haseleu stated. He is also aware that Carlson is catching him,
“Steve is creeping up there, he really good here so we didn’t lose too many
points to him, so we will keep going and see what happens.”
Carlson is now second in points, unofficially 50 points behind Haseleu.
Haseleu also collected his second ECHO chainsaw and Oregon Cutting Systems
package for his “Quick Cut” qualifying time of 18.370 seconds (97.986 mph).
Blake Brown had his best run in the ASAMT with a strong fourth place finish.
He ran in the top-five all night. Chris Wimmer, fresh off of his huge
victory on Tuesday night, came home fifth.
Tim Schendel collected another top-ten finish with a sixth place run. Brent
Kirchner came through the last chance race to finish seventh. Nick Murgic
started 24th, also coming through the last chance race to finish eighth.
Matt Kocourek was ninth and Nick Neville rounded out the top-ten.
Current NASCAR Camping World Truck Series point leader Ron Hornaday Jr.
finished 18th. He made the feature field after finishing fifth in the last
chance race.
The event saw five caution flags which included the competition yellow on
lap 75. All of the cautions were for spins with no one suffering heavy
damage. Carlson’s margin of victory was 2.115 seconds over Kraus.
The ASAMT returns to action on Saturday, July 18th with a second visit to
Dells Raceway Park in Wisconsin Dells, WI for the Race For the Gold Silver
Race.
