BOHNSACK, KOSTITZKY WIN HOCHSTETLER TOWING NIGHT FEATURES AT
HAWKEYE DOWNS
By Brad Grupe
CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (July 24) — Kurt Bohnsack and Scott Kositzky earned feature
wins Friday night before severe weather moved into the Cedar Rapids area and
forced the rest of ‘Hochstetler Towing Night’ action to be scrubbed.
The IMCA Northern SportMods returned to the race program Friday night after
being off the schedule for a couple weeks. After winning a heat race
earlier, Aric Becker led the early going in the 15-lap feature before
Creston Williams took the point on lap five. Three laps later, Ken Kositzky
squeezed into the lead but he didn’t hold the position long as Scott
Kositzky used an outside move to take the lead for good with five laps
remaining.
The win was the fourth of the year for Scott Kositzky. He has now won four
of the five features in 2009. Creston Williams finished second with Ken
Kositzky, Blake Carson, and Dave Coghlan rounded out the top five.
The other feature run Friday night was in Barron Motor Supply IMCA Stock
Cars. Point leader Kurt Bohnsack nabbed his second win of the season. The
race was slowed by a couple cautions and was finally halted with four laps
remaining as the weather closed in on the speedway.
Chad Siems led early but tangled with Greg Hentrich on lap nine. Dennis
Hundley and last week’s winner Brian Beaty traded the lead for a couple laps
after the restart before another caution scrambled the field. Bohnsack found
himself in the lead with Beaty second, Cory Houdek ended up in third,
Scooter Dulin was fourth, and Chad Siems finished in the five slot.
Hochstetler Towing, Official Towing service Provider of Hawkeye Downs, also
staged their annual “Bike Giveaway” with over two dozen kids taking home a
new bike along with a couple scooters.
Racing resumes next Friday night, July 31 with the 2nd Annual “Prelude to
the Dirt” event. The event is run as a “warm-up” to the Wednesday, August 5
appearance of the Deery Brothers IMCA Summer Series.
On the card Friday night is a special “A” Mod vs. “B” Mod race that pays
$500 to win. Miller Light Late Models, Budweiser Sportsmen, Barron Motor
Supply IMCA Stock Cars, Barron Motor Supply IMCA Hobby Stocks, IMCA Northern
SportMods, and Sunline Hornets are all slated for action.
As a thank you to the fans that attended Friday Night, Hawkeye Downs
officials have elected to honor Rain Checks from July 24 for later in the
season even though the program was over 50% complete.
