By Brad Grupe
CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (July 29) — This Friday night is the “2nd Annual Prelude to
the Dirt” event at Hawkeye Downs Speedway. The event is run the Friday prior
to “IMCA Dirt at the ‘Downs” and includes a special $500 to win “A” Mod vs.
“B” Mod race on the quarter-mile.
Also on the card Friday night are Miller Lite Late Models, Budweiser
Sportsmen, Barron Motor Supply IMCA Stock Cars, Barron Motor Supply IMCA
Hobby Stocks, and Sunline Hornets. The IMCA SportMods are eligible to run in
the “A” Mod vs. “B” Mod Race as well. Coors Light Modifieds are eligible to
run as “B” Mods if they conform to the posted rules.
AND, if that wasn’t enough, fans will also be treated to make-up features
for Miller light late Models, Budweiser Sportsmen, IMCA Hobby Stocks, and
Sunline Hornets. Severe weather hit the speedway just as the second feature
was wrapping up last week and the rest of the program was postponed until
this week.
Even though over half the program was completed last week, which is the
criteria for a “full program,” rain checks will be honored this week giving
fans more racing for their money!
Joey Gase continues to lead the Miller Lite Late Models with a six-point
cushion over Brad Osborn. Thor Anderson currently rides in third. Gase is
one of six different feature winners in the division so far this season. The
current points for this division include qualifying and heat points from
July 24.
Dave McCalla has just a one-point lead over Andy Duggan in Budweiser Mid-Am
Sportsmen. Travis Thompson is in third. McCalla has earned three trips to
Coca-Cola Victory Lane while Duggan has collected two feature wins.
Kurt Bohnsack holds a twelve-point margin over Cory Houdek in Barron Motor
Supply IMCA Stock Cars. Brian Beaty has the third slot on the chart. Five
different drivers have earned winners’ hardware this season.
Nathan Ballard has a narrow two-point lead over Scott Siems in Barron Motor
Supply IMCA Hobby Stocks. Roland Bohnsack currently is in third. The point
leader has one win this season while Siems has two and Bohnsack has one.
Shane Hanson sits atop the ever-growing Sunline Hornets division with Jim
Hanson and Brad Chandler next in line. Exact point totals are not published
for this division in the interest of maintaining fair and spirited
competition.
The action kicks off at 7pm Friday night with pre-race ceremonies, including
the introduction of the 1600ESPN/KGYM Driver of the Week. Grandstand Gates
open at 6pm.
Adult Grandstand Admission is $10, Seniors/Students are $7, and Children are
just $1. Pit Passes are $25 for regular events. Rain Checks from 07/24 will
be honored for this event.
