JOHNNY SPAW AND JEFF FRANKS DOUBLE UP ON FEATURE WINS AT
HAWKEYE DOWNS
FANS TREATED TO TEN FEATURE RACES FRIDAY NIGHT
By Brad Grupe
CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (July 31) Hawkeye Downs race fans were treated to ten
feature events and over 230 laps of feature racing Friday night July 31 as KHAK-FM presented the 2nd Annual Prelude to the Dirt.
Due to the rain-shortened program on July 24, Sunline Hornets, Barron Motor
Supply IMCA Hobby Stocks, Budweiser Sportsmen, and Miller Lite Late Models
ran make-up features. A full July 31 Papa Johns/I-Wireless Championship Cup
program was also run for those divisions plus the Barron Motor Supply IMCA
Stocks.
And, a special Prelude to the Dirt race pitting A Mods vs. B Mods
against each other on the quarter-mile was also on the card with thirteen
cars participating ranging from Hawkeye Downs Modifieds, to dirt modifieds,
to IMCA Sportmods.
Twenty-five cars answered the call for the 20-lap Sunline Hornets make-up
feature with Brad Burhite leading the early going. Bryce Bailey took command
near the halfway mark and maintained the point until Nathan Chandler powered
around Bailey with just two laps remaining. Bailey maintained his hold on
second and was followed across the stripe by Brad Chandler, Brad Burhite,
and Chuck Hanson. The win was the second of the season for Chandler.
Jeff Franks took top honors in the 15-lap Barron Motor Supply IMCA Hobby
Stock make-up event. After a trio of early cautions, including one for point
leader Nathan Ballard, the field settled in for the last half of the race
with Franks, who started in the third row, in control. Scott Siems took the
checkers in second with Roland Bohnsack, Duayne Herb, and Ballard filling
out the top of the order.
Andy Duggan scored his third victory of the season in an 18-lap Sportsmen
make-up race. Duggan started in row two, took the point from Brad Daugherty
on lap eight and cruised to the win, posting a winning margin of .651
seconds over point leader Dave McCalla. Daugherty finished third followed by
Kevin Lee and Doug Simon.
The final make-up feature of the evening was the Miller Lite Late Models.
Brad Osborn started on the pole for the scheduled 40-lap feature and led the
first ten laps or so before Johnny Spaw took control. Spaw, who started in
row three, pulled away from the pack and kept command after a couple
restarts, including one with just three laps remaining. Curt Van Der Wal
finished second, .868 seconds behind Spaw with point leader Joey Gase
finishing third. Logan Hale ran an impressive race finishing fourth while
Justin Jennings was fifth.
Larry Clausen started on the point of the 25-lap A vs. B Modified
feature and led early before Tony Olson grabbed the lead and never looked
back in the caution free event. Clausen, who is the point leader in regular
Hawkeye Downs Modified racing, maintained second as the laps ticked off the
board with Scott Kositzky crossing the stripe in third. Kositzky is the IMCA
SportMod point leader at Hawkeye Downs.
Chad Siems appeared to have things well in hand in the 20-lap IMCA Stock Car
feature with just a few laps remaining but point leader Kurt Bohnsack had
other ideas. Bohnsack took to the high side of the track and went from
fourth to first over the final five laps. Bohnsack made the winning pass
coming out of turn three on the final lap, finishing just .172 seconds ahead
of Siems. Bob Ahrendsen was third with Cory Houdek and Greg Hentrich
finishing fourth and fifth, respectively.
The Sunline Hornets jammed the Hawkeye Downs quarter-mile once again with a
twenty-four car field taking the green flag. Thanks to the luck of the draw,
point leader Shane Hanson started on the pole and was never challenged
throughout his run to the checkers. The race was slowed four times for
cautions but each time Hanson was able to pull away while others battled for
position behind. Nathan Chandler, who started dead last, motored through the
pack and finished second with Brad Burhite crossing the stripe in third.
Brad Chandler and Jim Hanson filled out the top five. The feature win was
the second of the season for Shane Hanson.
In Barron Motor Supply IMCA Hobby Stocks, Jeff Franks put a rubber stamp on
his earlier win by visiting Coca-Cola Victory Lane for the second time of
the evening. Scott Siems finished second again in this feature with Duayne
Herb, Nathan Ballard, and Shaun Myers next in line. The win was the third of
the season for Franks.
Dave McCalla and Andy Duggan battled side-by side for the lead nearly all of
the 18 lap Budweiser Sportsmen feature. The two who were tied for the points
lead after the make-up feature, swapped the lead back and forth during the
race which did allow the third place car of Kevin Lee to catch up in the
final laps. It was a near dead-heat as the three crossed the stripe for the
final time but McCalla had the edge and collected his fourth win of the
season. Duggan was second with Lee third. Doug Simon and Brad Daugherty
rounded out the top of the order.
The final feature of the night was a 40-lap Miller Lite Late Model race.
Multiple cautions slowed the race including one on the first lap that sent
the field scrambling for cover. Curt VanDerWal led in the early going but
never could build much of a lead as the yellow flag kept slowing the action.
Johnny Spaw took the lead on a lap 18 restart and was never challenged as he
collected his second win of the evening and fourth of the season.
Van Der Wal crossed under the flagstand in second followed by Brad Dvorak.
Point leader Joey Gase finished fourth and Thor Anderson rallied for fifth.
