HAWKEYE DOWNS “SEPTEMBER SHOWDOWN” STARTS THIS FRIDAY NIGHT !
CLOSEST POINTS BATTLES IN YEARS TO BE DECIDED THIS MONTH
CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (September 1) - The “September Showdown” kicks off at
Hawkeye Downs Speedway this Friday night, September 4 with all seven
divisions in action. Not a single driver in the seven divisions racing at
Hawkeye Downs has clinched a Papa Johns/I-Wireless Championship Series point
title yet and five of the divisions feature either a tie for the point lead
or a lead of less than ten points.
In addition to Friday night, races are scheduled for September 18th and
25th.
Dave McCalla and Andy Duggan are deadlocked at 437 points each in Budweiser
Sportsmen with three events remaining. McCalla has visited Coca-Cola Victory
Lane five times this season while Andy Duggan has four wins. Travis Thompson
is in third.
The Coors Light Modifieds also feature a tie with Larry Clausen and
defending champion Tim Plummer at the top of the chart with 436 points each.
Each driver has three wins. Ryan Luedtke holds down the third spot twelve
points behind the leaders.
In Barron Motor Supply IMCA Hobby Stocks, Nathan Ballard has charged to the
front of the pack and currently leads Scott Siems by a single point. Ballard
has four wins to Siems two. Roland Bohnsack is third on the point chart.
The next closest race is in Barron Motor Supply IMCA Stock Cars. Kurt
Bohnsack has a scant three-point lead over Cory Houdek. Bohnsack has Three
wins to Houdek’s one. Bob Ahrendsen is only ten points behind in third.
The IMCA SportMods have been dominated by Scott Kositzky thus far this
season with five wins but even with that much winners’ hardware he only has
an eight point cushion over rookie Blake Carson who just picked up his first
career win. Another Rookie, Ken Kositzky, is in third.
While Joey Gase holds a thirty-point lead over Johnny Spaw and Thor Anderson
in Miller Lite Late Models, the Hawkeye Downs point system for late models
ensures that the point race won’t be over until Barron Motor Supply Season
Championships on September 25. Unlike the other Hawkeye Downs divisions the
late models only have two point races remaining.
The largest point margin of any division is in Sunline Hornets where Nathan
Chandler has a sizable fifty-two point lead over Shane Hanson. Each driver
has two feature wins in the division, which has seen seven different feature
winners. However, with three races to go and the combination of heat points,
feature points, passing points, and “bonus” points available the title is
not out of reach for a few different drivers.
The action kicks off at 7pm Friday night with pre-race ceremonies, including
the introduction of the 1600ESPN/KGYM Driver of the Week. Grandstand Gates
open at 6pm.
Adult Grandstand Admission is $10, Seniors/Students are $7, and Children are
just $1. Pit Passes are $25 for regular events.
