IT’S SEPTEMBER AND WE’RE STILL RACING AT HAWKEYE DOWNS!
NONE OF THE SEVEN DIVISIONS HAVE BEEN DECIDED YET!
CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (Sept 17) - The calendar may say September and football’s
may be flying through the air but we’re still racing at Hawkeye Downs
Speedway. Two races remain to decide what may be the closest point races in
Hawkeye Downs history.
All seven divisions are once again on the card for this Friday night,
September 18, with Papa Johns/I-Wireless Championship Cup Series points up
for grabs in all divisions except Miller Lite Late Models.
The Late Models will still be running but this is a non-points event as some
teams will be at Iowa Speedway running an ASA Late Model Series event. While
no points will be awarded for the Sept. 18 feature for that division, it’s
interesting to note that Joey Gase has a 25-point lead over Thor Anderson.
Given the point formula for this division, this point battle won’t be
decided until the final race of the season.
Nearly every division still has the points title up for grabs and it looks
certain that nothing will be decided until Barron Motor Supply Season
Championships on September 25.
In Budweiser Sportsmen, Andy Duggan has a slim one-point lead over Dave
McCalla. Each driver has five wins to their credit. Travis Thompson
currently holds down the third slot on the chart.
The Coors Light Modifieds points chart shows Tim Plummer with just a
one-point lead over Larry Clausen. Plummer has visited Coca-Cola Victory
Lane five times while Clausen has collected three checkered flags. Ryan
Luedtke is in third.
Moving to the quarter-mile, the Barron Motor Supply IMCA Stock Car point
battle is almost as close. Kurt Bohnsack has a two-point cushion over Cory
Houdek in that division with Brian Beaty riding in third.
Nathan Ballard sits atop the Barron Motor Supply IMCA Hobby Stocks also with
just a two point margin over second place Scott Siems. Roland Bohnsack is in
third.
Scott Kositzky has a little more breathing room in IMCA Sportmods but even
his point lead is only a scant five points over rookie Blake Carson. Another
rookie, Ken Kositzky is in third and still has an outside shot at the title.
Finally, in Sunline Hornets, Nathan Chandler has a seemingly safe lead over
Jim Hanson. However, this race won’t likely be decided until the final
night. This division uses heat points, passing points, and feature points so
it is possible for Hanson or a couple other drivers behind him to accumulate
enough points to overtake Chandler under the right circumstances.
The action kicks off at 7pm Friday night with pre-race ceremonies, including
the introduction of the 1600ESPN/KGYM Driver of the Week. Grandstand Gates
open at 6pm.
Adult Grandstand Admission is $10, Seniors/Students are $7, and Children are
just $1. Pit Passes are $25 for regular events.
