WILD LAST LAPS HIGHLIGHT ‘YELLOWBOOK NIGHT’ FEATURES AT HAWKEYE DOWNS

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA  (June 25, 2010) - Close finishes ruled at Hawkeye Downs Speedway Friday night in round six of action in the Papa Johns Cup/ I-Wireless Championship Series. All seven divisions were back on the track after last weeks’ action fell victim to rain. Long-time Hawkeye Downs Speedway sponsor Yellowbook presented Friday night’s program.

Nathan Ballard notched his fifth win of the 2010 campaign in Barron Motor Supply IMCA Hobby Stocks after taking the point from Roland Bohnsack on lap 11 of the scheduled 15-lap feature. Dave McCalla led the first half of the race before Bohnsack secured the lead just past the halfway mark.  Ballard appeared well on his way to the fifth win when caution slowed the action with two circuits remaining around the quarter-mile. That set up a green-white-checker finish with Ballard maintaining his lock on the lead.

The final results were scrambled a bit after technical inspection eliminated a couple cars from the top of the order. The official finish shows Jeremy Robbins, Dave McCalla, Kandi Floyd, and Matt Petrzelka finishing behind Ballard.

Tim Plummer also racked up his fifth trip to victory lane in the Budweiser Modifieds but despite the Norway driver getting an early lead collecting the checkered flag wasn’t necessarily easy. A pair of late-race cautions resulted in some wild restarts with plenty of action behind the leader. Rodney Rocarek crossed the stripe in second, followed by Larry Clausen, Arlo Becker, and Brian Allen.  Polesitter Ryan Luedtke was in the fray as well until a flat left front tire with five laps remaining ended a solid run.

The Barron Motor Supply IMCA Stock Car feature saw a near photo finish at the checkered flag with Dave Ballstaedt squeezing out the win over Cory Houdek by just one-thousandth of a second according to the electronic timing and scoring system.  Bob Ahrendsen ran a very close third. Houdek appeared to catch Ballstaedt a bi off guard when he  nosed under him on the final lap and the duo appeared dead even exiting turn four but Ballstaedt carried just enough extra momentum to secure the win. Ahrendsen finished third with Jim Hanson and Brian Frianks also finishing in the top five. The win was the first of the year for Ballstaedt.

Moving back to the half-mile, multi-time track champion Dave McCalla recorded his first win of the season in Speed-e-Pan Sportsmen in fairly convincing fashion after taking the lead on lap three. Ben Glascock led the first couple laps before surrendering the point to McCalla. Andy Duggan finished second after taking that position from Glascock with nine laps to go. McCalla finished over three seconds ahead of Duggan with Glascock and travis Thompson close behind.

Aric Becker took command of the Coca-Cola IMCA SportMod feature on lap four and  was never seriously challenged the rest of the way, despite a caution with two laps remaining that set up a green-white-checkers finish. The win was the third of the season for Becker. Tim Dains started and finished in second with Scott Fiala, Blake Carson, and Brogan Fiala filling out the order.  Fiala was not running for points.

Dallas Chandler went from fifth to first in the final five laps of the Sunline Hornets twenty-lap feature but that’s just the tip of the iceberg as far as wholesale position changes among the twenty-five car field.  Brad Burhite emerged from the chaos as the early leader and continues to lead when the race was red-flagged at the halfway mark for a crash that sent Rikki Leejean Chesmore into one of the barriers on the backstretch. Strictly as a  precautionary measure, the Cedar Rapids Fire Department  were called to remove the roof of the car to safely remove Chesmore, who was conscious and talking with rescue personnel during the procedure.

Burhite continued to lead when racing resumed and with five laps remaining Bryce Bailey, Nathan Chandler, Shane Hanson, and Dallas Chandler were running at the front of the pack behind Burhite. The final five laps was a three and four-wide scramble that saw Burhite get lost in the shuffle and Chandler at the front of the field. Bailey finished second followed by Nathan Chandler, Shane hanson, and Derek Parrott. The win was the first for Dallas Chandler.

For awhile Friday night it looked like Performance Concepts late Model point leader Tim Plummer might be well on the way to his fourth win of the season but Johnny Spaw had other ideas. Plummer took the lead from Brad Osborn on lap three of the thirty-lap feature and appeared to have things well in hand until seven laps to go when the first of a pair of late-race cautions bunched the field. Spaw bolted into second on the restart and while he was gaining ground on Plummer the laps were ticking off. With just two laps to go, a spin bunched the pack again setting up a two-lap dash to the finish.

Spaw was on the money again on the restart and dived into the lead posting a .211 second win over Plummer. Kyle Hinrichs finished third with Brad Osborn and Justin Jennings close behind. This was the first win of the season for multi-time champion Spaw. He started in the second row.

Racing resumes Friday night July 2 with all seven divisions in action.
