CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (June 30) - Hawkeye Downs Speedway invites race fans to kick of their July 4th holiday weekend at the speedway this Friday night! Six divisions of racing, Lil Racer Car Club BoxCar races and post-race entertainment in the Miller Tavern on the Mall are just part of what’s in store. Racers in Performance Concepts Late Models, Budweiser Modifieds, Barron Motor Supply IMCA Stock Cars, Barron Motor Supply IMCA Hobby Stock, Coca-Cola IMCA SportMods, and Sunline Hornets will compete for valuable points in the Papa Johns Cup/I-Wireless Championship Series. The Speed-e-Pan Sportsmen have the week off. Tim Plummer currently leads the way in Performance Concepts Late Models with three feature wins and a 14 point cushion over Kyle Hinrichs. Hinrichs has one feature win this season. Plummer also is the leader in Budweiser Modifieds with five feature wins and holds a substantial point lead over Ryan Luedtke. Will Plummer take his sixth win this Friday night? Get an early start on the 4th of July Holiday at Hawkeye Downs to find out. Mr. consistency, Bob Ahrendsen, sits atop the chart in Barron Motor Supply IMCA Stock Cars and he’s done it without visiting victory lane yet this season. Jim Hanson, who has two wins, sits just eight points behind Hanson. Three other drivers have won features in this very competitive division. Nathan Ballard has dominated the Barron Motor Supply IMCA Hobby Stock through the first part of the season, collecting five feature wins. Kandi Floyd is enjoying her best season to date and currently is in second in points. Aric Becker has a narrow three point edge over Scott Kositzky in Coca-Cola IMCA SportMods and has three feature wins, including one this past Friday Night. Kositzy has two trips to victory lane. Finally, the wild and crazy Sunline Hornets division continues to be led by Bryce Bailey but last week’s winner, Dallas Chandler, has been closing the gap on the points chart. Thirty-five different drivers have participated in the division so far this season with twenty-five cars starting last weeks’ feature. Plus, a special “Promoter’s Choice” Sunline Hornets event has been added to the card. The Lil’ Racer Car Club will present the “kid-powered” BoxCar Races during intermission. Kids can sign up and get more information about the club at the table under the main grandstand. The Front Gate opens at 6pm with Hot Laps slated for 6:35 pm. Pre-Race Ceremonies including the Hanford American Legion Post #5 Color Guard will begin at 7:15pm with the first race at 7:30pm.
